Ok so I kinda have a feeling the answer to this is going to make me feel stupid. I have what I "think" is a early to mid 80's khs classic 10 speed. I'm in the process of turning it into a single speed. I'm trying to remove the right crank arm to get to the chaing ring, & for the life of me can't get the flipping crank arm off. I went & bought a crank puller, but that does not even go in the space, i'm assuming there is another type of crank, but being a rookie, I have no clue what the "another" is. Here is a pic, Any advice on on how to remove this female dog that has accomplished in making me feel ******** would be much appreciated . .

Looks like a crank puller should work. That looks to be a square taper with a nut instead of a bolt.

The proper crank puller should have sleeve that is threaded inside and out. The outer threads go into the crank threads and the inner are used to support the solid beam that presses against the bb.

Were you able to get the NDS side off? Should be similar since they inherently share the same system since they have the same bb.

No they are both stuck on there, is there a different name for that type of crank? Just so I kind of know what i'm taking about when I go into a bike shop without having to play charades lol

That looks exactly like the way my cranks are attached. Mine are standard square-taper cranks with 22 mm x 1 threads and with crank nuts instead of bolts, like yours. I bought a Park CCP-2 crank puller that worked great to remove them. Unless you have a different thread size (and 22 mm x 1 is the standard size) I don't see why that wouldn't work for you.

Some (cheap)crank pullers aren't deep enough to deal with both bolt-on and nut-on BBs. As widsith pointed out, the Park model works on both.

You are removing the nuts first aren't you?
Screw the inner part of the puller all the way out.
Screw in the "body" of the puller and snug up with a wrench.
Insert inner part of tool and screw it in until arm comes off.

You can probably change/remove the rings with out even having to remove the crank if thats all you want to do.

Take apart the crank-arm puller! Unscrew the inner pusher part ALL THE WAY out so that it's not in contact with the BB-spindle. Then grease the threads on the outer part and thread it CAREFULLY all the down into the crankarm. The tools typically have flats on the outside to tighten down with an adjustable wrench. Use a wrench on it at the very end so that you're sure the tool is all the way down into the crankarm. THEN and ONLY THEN, do you screw in the middle pusher part.

what kind of crank is it ? could be a self extracting crank arm. ive seen older campy cranksets with them...

No, it's a cheapo crank with nutted BB-spindle. Trick with these is you have to back out the pusher on the tool all the way.

Ha, I love how Danno and Bill said what I said, just with more correct lingo and infinitely more decipherable. :)

Take a pic of your crank puller. Maybe you have the wrong tool, though that isn't likely because other cranks that use pullers are few and far in between.
