If you're going to use an Xtracycle for hauling kids, you really have to go out of your way to make it safe for them. Great thing about kids though is that they grow, so an X is only a temporary step up to their own bikes and/or tandem stoking.

Surly is also now producing a long bike, The Big Dummy (http://www.surlybikes.com/bigdummy.html). I don't know their whole line but I believe it is a new addition.

Yes it is a purpose built frame to take Xtracycle components, advantages are a stiffer, stronger frame than an Xtracycle "modified" frame.

A few more for the family thread:

Dutchbikes.us (http://www.dutchbikes.us) carry Sorte Jernhest trikes. If you have a family of 4 or more, check out their Conversation Bikes for grins and giggles.
Family Chariot Tricycles (http://worksmancycles.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page39.html)
And I suppose if you're trying to get two kids on one bike you can mount a child seat onto the back of this Kidztandem (http://www.kidztandem.com/).
