Kona Jake. Buy and go ride before the cross season is over!

Giant TCX 2 now retails for $975.
TCX has a mix of Sora/Tiagra components for $75 more than a Kona Jake which has full Tiagra.

You can get a Motobecane Fantom for $799 (tax free, shipping free) with Tiagra/105 mix, and right now they're throwing in some upgrades to their wheelset, too. Great deal if you don't mind guessing your own size, staying home to sign for the delivery, and putting some of it together yourself.

In addition to those mentioned above:

-Surly may still be had for under a grand.
-Bianchi San Jose is well under a thousand, but is singlespeed.
-Tricross singlecross (again, singlespeed) retails for 910 dollars in 2009.
-I think the Ibex is under a grand (again, like Bikesdirect, mail order only).
-You may be able to find Fuji Cross Comp somewhere for under a grand. Heavy wheels, but full 105. If there's a Performance near you they may have some NOS 08s or 07s still on the floor.
-Bianchi Volpe is somewhere between a touring and cyclocross bike, but lots of people race them.

Good luck!

I'd also look around for a 2008 Felt F1X, they should be going for ~$1000.
