Ever had a co worker really go out of thier way to screw you over. I dont mean tell the boss you did something to save their own ***, but to really try to scerw you big time for some minimal gain for themselves. I think it started out as a little lie that grew into a monster. she did not expect the boss to confront me about it, and then me to go off on the boss. But that is what happened today. She had flat lied about me, jsut to get an office of her own (or self aggrandisement).

Course I did not know about that so I proceeded to act like a dummy, I never get mad unless you try to run over me in traffic, but I was really po'd at my boss (I am protected so unless I hurt someone they really can do nothing with me) because I thought the boss was harrassing me because I am a guy and ride a bike to work Anyway, we got it settled until tommrow when the boss and I will discuss it with her. But I dont think I have ever had anyone just flat lie for personal gain at my expense for no real reason like that. I think it started out with jsut a lie she thought would never get out, she just figured the boss would feel sorry for her, think she was wonder and such a victim and let it go, and screw up my evaluation because of it without ever confronting me.

the other problem is she really needs me. she often sneaks out early to pick up her kids and I just work in a different office for a while so no one knows. She pumps so I always leave the office for her convience. The list goes on. Boy she screwed up. Thanks for the vent. I am looking forward to tommorow.

I've had a good friend just flip sides on me and become a nasty two-face. He started running around the office telling him what she said and telling her what he said. I use to ride home with him on occasion if I was going to bike in the next morning. He would immediately flap his jaws about coworkers. And what was my fault 100% I would get in on it. Then he would run and tell them what I said. Then! Run back to me and tell me what they said.

I learned my lesson. And told him to F-off one day. He still tries to get things going but I continue to give him the go pound salt message.

Not only does it happen, you should expect it to happen.

This book should help.

A lot of great advice in this book.

I jsut have a hard time understanding how people can just bald face lie for no reason. I know they do, but I just am not used to it.

You just had your first eye-opener that is all. Sure it sucks, but it happens all of the time.

Guess I am fortunate to get this old before I actually catch someone at it.

Yes, I've had it happen. Not worth discussing further in my case, but yes, these things happen.

When I worked IT in previous places, I had cow-orkers who worked in other company divisions try their best to make false allegations to cover up their incompetence.

One good example was a web "designer" who was unable to meet a deadline, so he trashed a production Web server's wwwroot directory and claimed it was IT's fault that the box got haxxored. I ended up restoring the box (NetApp servers have snapshots of filesystems), showing that the system logs were not tampered with (they were sent to another box), showing that the only user on was the Web designer... and showing the "rm -rf *" in the .bash_history file.

In bigger corporations, having good documentation is critical, because there are tons of people who are wanting to have a hacker trash their stuff as a cover up for a deadline about to lapse, or work that is sub par.

This is why I try to push for networked backups, and log dump boxes -- people can modify system logs left and right on systems they have (or can illegitimately get) root on, but they are not touching the dump box that has no ports open on it except for 514.

I'm curious as to how old the co-worker is. My experience has been that a lot of younger "Gen X" types seem to feel entitled to things without having to work for them.

Hey, I'm Gen X! Blame it on Gen Y! :D

The archetype I fear is the slick "consultant" type, the age range is about 25-40. They usually have -zero- clue about the task at hand, but are as slick/slimy as car salesmen and got a contract to "fix" stuff because they are good fast talkers with management. They come in a firm and are paid the big bucks, and when they leave its usually the existing staff holding the bag of a unmaintainable steaming piece of crap left behind. When working, they do nada, and demand that the existing employees do stuff for them. Should employees not document what they do for these "consultant" types, the consultant will immediately run off with the credit.

If they are not in the IT division, they start doing underhanded stuff like deleting files or deliberately breaking config files to say that IT failed in its job. This is because they promised a deadline of weeks on a project that takes months, and they buy time by trying to make IT look bad.

she just turned 30. She is not a consultant but the behaviors sound about right.

I think low class behavior knows no age bracket.

It's sad when it happens...just have to deal with it and hopefully not sink to their level.

Happens all the time, especially when they announce a bunch of workforce reductions (or headcount adjustments, or resource reallocations, or whatever term they're using this week to avoid calling them layoffs).

I have no idea when Gen X is anymore... I think it's the generation ~5 years younger than I am. But, I definitely agree. We just hired a slew of green people for the software group and they stink of entitlement. One of the kids actually books a conference room all day every day because he wants an "office" instead of a standard cubicle.

He's always coming around asking if I can change something in the hardware to make his job easier. When I try to explain that our process does not allow hardware to change unless/until the S/W architects determine that a bug simply cannot be fixed without it, he whines to management and tries to go around the process. Even when there is a problem with the hardware, we expend every effort to fix or work around it in S/W before committing to an artwork change.

Do you also notice that they tend to want to shove their responsibilities off onto other people/groups?

Oh yeah, it's happened. Back when I was still a newbie dispatcher, one of the paramedic supervisors kept trying to get me fired because I was a newbie dispatcher. Then he got fired, and I stayed and worked and learned so I got better at what I do.

I love happy endings.

Yes, and it wasn't a Gen X'er. Baby Boomer, actually.

I had a guy like this who was unreal. He basically tried to get me to do his job for him. He was in his 50s. Whined like a baby, tho

watch where you throw that 'consultant' term there, boy:twitchy:

She started crying. Gosh I hate that. She admitted to it and apoligized. Things turned out better than I ever expected. Bet I never have to deal with that problem again. Least not for a long time. Now I gotta start being nice to my boss, I am not sure I know how but I will try.

There is a very large difference between a knowledgeable consultant (with no quotes around the word) hired on for a deployment or upgrade versus a "consultant" who is hired on who is the embodiment of incompetence.

That is why I use the word "consultant" in quotes to describe the wastes of prolapsed rectal tissue that I can't stand... real consultants are a blessing to work with and worth every cent of their pay.

:roflmao2: Nice insult. It almost makes me want to start a separate thread on most creative insults.
