Road Cycling - .....so I'm getting a new bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was going straight and somebody made a right turn into me destroying my bike (I came out with only scratches). So i'm getting about $600 for a 6 month old Trek 1000. The question is, what should I get: A new Trek 1000 from LBS, a slightly used and cheap lower end bike from ebay, or a slightly used, but a lot better $600 bike from ebay. Spending more money is out of the question. I could stretch it to $650 tops. If you stumble upon a good bike on ebay in 56cm, you're welcome to post it :)
I bought a great bike off Ebay for $700. There's lot's of good deals there if you know what you want.
Ebay is a great place to BUY but not so to SHOP.

How much damage is there to the bike? Can you salvage some of the components? If so, you might want to consider spending most of that $600 on a new frame and build from there. You might end up with a better bike that way.
I have a 56cm Allez Sport (105/Tiagra Triple) with an upgraded fork that I'm looking to sell-PM me if you're interested.

perhaps look at a vintage bike? personally i think they are alot nicer than these new low end bikes anyways
(traditional geometry, unidiameter round tubing, threaded stems, curved steel forks, etc)
you'll probably get more for the dollar

Check out the deals currently on Ebay & see what suits you. I got a Trek 1500 with some DuraAce & Mavic for $485 & I'm purdy happy!
See what's available and offer Buy It Now even when it's not listed... A lot of sellers see the lump sump being offered to them vs. the $4.00 increments over 10 days & they are happy to oblidge and end the auction.
Good luck on your bike hunt!
Glad you are still around to look for one :)

Here's a Trek 1000... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3666390410&category=58093
And a Specialized Allez Epic... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3666603326&category=58092
Why is his insurance not picking up the full cost. You should be able to get an upgrade and a few bucks for your trouble if you play your cards right.
ewitz...go chase a bumper-some of us don't cheat insurance companies for a living
If he got hit he should be fully remunerated

Ewitz is correct.
You should get replacement cost for a bicycle--at least that's the opinion of the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association's legal advisor, Richard Forcier, in this month's newsletter.
"Collect full value for your bicycle, clothing, and property damaged in the accident. This is called 'replacement value.' Don't accept the argument that the bike is used and you should be paid less than a new bike."
I didn't see anywhere where the OP stated he wasn't getting a full replacement value. He simply asked if it would be better to invest the money in a more bang-for-buck manner and how.

$600 is about right for replacement cost for a Trek 1000. One of the LBS chains here in Houston has it on their website ('04 model) for $520, advertised retail price per Trek's website is $569.99, so $600 sounds fair if you're just talking about the bike.
