Any advice for affordable small-shop cyclocross frames? I'd like to avoid the big names and find a specialty shop that may have an affordable, but completely race-ready 'cross frame. I'm coming from road cycling and looking to to get into cyclocross, but don't want to spend a ton of cash. Also prefer to support the little guy...
I've looked at Van Dessel and Moots. Any others?

They aren't up on the site officially yet...but check out the Spooky Supertouch cross frame http://www.spookybikes.com/news/?p=238 . Just a barebones aluminum race frame, pretty sure you can get custom paint/sticker kit, 800 bucks, light weight. And this one is welded in Oregon, sold out of MA. Oh and the welder weld's frames for the likes of Turner, Moots and Titus....gotta be some good quality.

It's not exactly boutique, but you can get a semi-custom Gunnar Cross-Hairs for pretty cheap.

In terms of small builders, Paul at Rock Lobster, his frames are completely custom and cost about $1300. It is hard to know what your price point on a frame is when you throw out Van Dessel ($1000) and Moots ($quite a bit more) in the same sentence.

markhr,
Do you know if the Condors are easy to get in/to the US? I just read a test of their fixie in Cycling Plus and they reaved about the quality/value of the Condor.

Sorry, no I don't. I'm just a fan (small, very high quality, family owned and run business.....if London's cycle couriers use them too then :thumb: ) and not an employee.

All I can suggest is contacting them and asking about current stock, shipping and previous international customers' experiences.

I'm not sure how small they are but Waterford makes great framesets. If their price is a little steep try Gunnar, made by Waterford but TIG welded and maybe half the price. The Gunnar cross frame is either Reynolds 853 or True Temper which are about as strong and light as steel gets. Pluse Gunnar seems to have a cult following and higher than normal resale price. If that's not enough, they're made in America. Good luck on whatever you choose.

Curtlo is probably the best deal out there.

This is by far the best suggestion if someone is really interested in getting the "real thing" cyclocross frame.

Ira Ryan and Mike Zancanato seem to like Cross a lot. But they are probably a bit expensive. So another option would be a Euro frame. Lyon Sport offers some English frames (in addition to his own ones). Simoncini and Vetta are two cheaper Italian frame shops that offer cross frames. Simoncini even has a few championships to his name. Alan and Guerciotti make cool production and custom frames too.
