My history teacher was playing a song by Modest Mouse in class today, and I can't find it anywhere. I don't know what it is.
My first impression is a really rough voice on some unmatching tunes really. Kinda piano and a bit of guitar.

Not really I know that on the album the song "Are you dead or are you just sleeping" (I think that is what its called) is right after it.

If it's the song right before Satin In a Coffin (which is the only song I can think of that has the lyrics "are you dead or are you sleeping" in it), it would be The View. Granted, I don't really know that it matches your initial description.

Modest Mouse is from Issaquah, WA....practically my backyard.

Edit: I barely know the band though. The only song I know by them is "Float On" (http://www.lyricsmania.com/lyrics/modest_mouse_lyrics_2385/good_news_for_people_who_love_bad_news_lyrics_6646/float_on_lyrics_78647.html).
