Actually yah it was somthing someone did. I had some big old rant on here about how unfiendly you recumbentiers are, but realized I or the recumbents I ran into were just having a bad day so I erased it. I had a change of heart and realized the a-holes I run into are hopfully out of the norm. Plus, when I thought about selling my trike I realized I was punishing myself for other peoples issues. I put the fairing back on to deal with the rain (I cant do that with my df) and I am riding back in tomorrow. so, so long and hello.

I can relate!
A couple of weeks ago I was riding my Tour Easy and came across 3 other recumbent riders at separate points on the ride. I made pleasant salutations to all, only to be given the cold shoulder, as if I had the Plague or somethin'! :o
Took a couple more miles before I convinced myself it was really their issue and the 'bent smile returned to my face. :D
Hopefully their day got better too. ;)

p.s., I say HI or GOOD DAY to every cycle I see, 'bent or otherwise! :thumb:

Nice to see you back. My wife and I took a two year break from bents. I went to a road bike, and she didnt ride at all. It was not fun, it seemed like a race everytime I went out :(. So about a month ago we went out and bought two new bents (hers a Bacchetta Giro, mine a Catrike 700). I got my riding partner back and Im smiling again. We wave at everyone and say hi but some act like they dont see us. Then we just hope that their day gets better. :D

I told you welcome back when you wanted to and it came quick...which I am glad...never want to lose a good rider, someone who likes bikes and all they mean. We all have days good and not so good....may the good ones rule.

I don't ride bents but I just popped in to see what is going on in the bent world. This phenomena seems to be common with other folks too. My experience is only about 50-60% other riders will acknowledge another cyclist, regardless of what they are riding.........a sad statement of our society.:(

Thanks for the welcome back, Ill remember this when the next recumbent gives me the cold shoulder. I had a great ride in today, sunny and low traffic and all smiles. Cool.

See another rider, give them a sign that you know what they are doing is worthwild.

'Bent riders seem more predisposed to take it personally, but it's more widespread than just us. The real problem isn't the lack of waving, it's the expectation that total strangers will wave back. Not everyone out there is riding just to meet people and socialize. They have their own lives, and what we're riding or doing may not be important to them at all.

Just ride and don't worry about others.

First thing you've got to remember is that almost all two wheel recumbents don't ride with no hands, so that cuts it down to one hand available. Then there are those of us with low bent mileage that need both hands on the bars more than others. Keep an eye out for the return head nod.:twitchy:

Heck, it's getting tough around Portland nowadays. There's all sorts of new 'bent riders, and I can't stop to talk to them all. I'd never get anywhere!

Earlier this month we had a "welcome back" ride for a visiting former member. What was going to be a 60mile ride turned into a 25 mile ride and a barbeque (http://www.flickr.com/photos/bacchetta_aero/sets/72157607958825180/show/). People wanted to sit around and yack, not ride. Oh, well!

Welcome back squirrel! Too bad you didn't ride up here in the north country. Everybody is friendly, with the possible exception of the racing types. Even they aren't so bad. But when you meet another bike, either an upright or bent, everybody smiles and waves! Same with driving a car or pickup.
I had an out of state buddy riding in a car with me one time and he commented "Wow, you sure must know everybody in ND! Everybody waves at you!" Hah! It's called the "ND wave!" Probably the "midwestern wave!" might be more accurate!
It's like that with bikes, too! Not many of us bents, but with a possible exception of the racers, EVERYBODY is friendly!

I know how you feel squirl. I’ve been snubbed by several people in our local recumbent club, so I’ve stayed away. I’ve just been doing my own thing riding with family and having fun at it.

In my experience, the long time riders are the most friendly. I've always found a great camaraderie among cyclists, DF and 'bent riders. The ones who don't wave back to me on bike trails frequently have this look of intense concentration that I've assumed comes with just being nervous about being on a bike. And frequently, their bikes and conditioning all say 'rookie.' So I continue to wave or smile to all of 'em and if they don't respond back, hey, that's their problem.

On the bikes I pass there are weiners, whiners, and winners...once in a while a wino, but that is rare. I prefir the winner status...but rarely do i race..............................................

That's exactly what I do.

And if they don't respond, I don't worry about it.

There are different sub-populations out there. When I ride rail trails & greet someone, about 90% return the greeting. And nearly all of the exceptions are people who look like they are in the 18-30 age group. If they are riding a road bike, wearing lycra, and moving fast, they almost never respond.

On roads I'd say only 10%-20% return a greeting. Although bent rider to bent rider is much higher.

When riding on rail & bike trails, when I run into another bent rider, we usually stop to have a conversation and compare our bikes. These are people I've never met before.

+1 on the wave and let wave...or not. I know I am having a good time. They may be busy, or concentrating, or haveing a bad day, or who knows what, but being personable for me is something I like to do.

I remember a Bicycling article a few years ago had a "Ten things cyclists know that other people don't"... one was that the liklihood another cyclist will wave at you is inversetly proportional to how much they spent on their bike. At the time, it struck me as very true. bents may be an exception, but overall it still holds true in my observation.

The "expensive" bike rider coming towards me "owns the road" aboard his asphalt pedal rocket, and yet,
I wave & say howdy!

I'm ignored by the owner of a FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR racing bike. I'm sure he thinks I'm a crackpot tinkerer that made my ride out of old shopping carts. When in fact, it's a $8,000 tricycle from Australia.

Aaaah,..ignorance is bliss.
