proof if ever it was needed to d-lock the rim inside the rear triangle.

Well that would have been an awful odd way to have had the bike locked up if indeed it is stolen. Isn't the norm to put the lock round the seat tube and the rear rim.

Could have been stolen I guess. Or maybe the original ower just abandonded it after the wheels and such were stolen.

it was probably locked to the railing by the top-tube. [which begs the question... why didn't the cut the bike instead of the railing?]

that could just be him not knowing where to look and/or the numbers not being legible. i bought a bike from a kid a while back who said that same thing about it, and the serial was right there on the bottom bracket, but paint had filled it in so much that it is nearly unreadable.

there is a small chance that he simply lost the key...but you'd think he would mention that, instead of just saying there isn't one...but if that were the case, he could tell you more about the frame.

I guess the Ebay authorities don't really peruse too much for possibly stolen merchandise

most stolen goods on ebay are sold under hijacked accounts or by sellers which sell tons of other random crap. his other auctions are for mostly bike things minus the lakers warm up suit. if your suspicious and want to bid on it, just ask if he can take a picture of the bottom bracket for the serial.

That's not a completely illogical place to put a lock when your bike is just sitting around. There might well be better places to put it, but sitting there just like that would work. Then you loose the key, then sell the wheels. Then you decide to get rid of it.
I'll put it under - might be stolen, not really any more likely than the billion other frames on e-bay.

Could have been locked to a dug up street sign or other pole. So when the theif wants a bike, they just lift up the pole they previously dug up, get the bike out, and go! go!.

it seems like that may be a good place to lock the lock to the frame while riding around so you don't have to shove it down your pants or in a bag.
