I just got my first raleigh twenty in the mail yesterday and I love it! It's a fantastic bike and I look forward to making it an awesome project. I need some help on some bits though. I need a longer stem and seatpost. I feel pretty sure I can find a longer seat post without too much trouble but I need a hugely tall stem. I'm 6'1" and generally ride a 60-62cm frame. any suggesions?

Jack - try http://www.tariksaleh.com/bike/twenty/twenty.html. I believe Sheldon referred to this as the "Tarik Device" and it ought to help you. I'm 2" shorter than you and fit my R20 with everything maxed out. Good luck - they're great bikes as you know.

If you need a very long seat post. You can cut up an old normal bike. The seat tube on most old normal bikes was 28.6mm diameter. Then insert that into the seat tube. And use the seat pin that came with the donor bike.
Might be easiest to just cut out a section of plain seat tube. With out the seat clamp. As there will be seat stays and the top tube to cut off. Easy to get a seat clamp in the 28.6mm size

I coined that phrase for my friend's - Tarik Saleh's - Raleigh Twenty bike.
The photo in the link - is one that I took several years ago when Tarik was on a ride with our fixie bike group on Saturday morning's in Maryville, Tn.

The "Tarik Device" is just a piece of PVC pipe cut to use as a spacer on a long steerer tube. Tarik and I purchased custom built forks for our Twenty's that had a really long steerer tube - so instead on using stacks and stacks of expensive aluminum spacers - Tarik slide a piece of PVC pipe over the steerer tube and then I copied his idea on my own Twenty seen here:

In my case - I painted the PVC pipe silver to match the stem.

Note - these were special forks with extra long steerer tubes and used aheadset (threadless) style mountings NOT threaded headsets.

It is nice to see that my phrase "Tarik Device" is still being used.

what r your plans for the bike? That may have a bearing on which method you use. Go to my blog www.Phatatude.com and then click on the header "Raleigh Twenty Blog". There are a couple of options in there. I'm posting this from my phone so I couldn't cut and paste the specific links. (sorry).
Hey humble, didn't you post on the single speed site that you had a lil speed wobble that you thought was because of the PCV? (I though I read that somewhere a while ago)... Humble, your bile is pretty flippin sick lookin'. In fact, I've had it as one of the bikes on my desktop for over a year now...

R-20s: old steel, new ideas...

There is also a technique that "Jur" used check here http://members.iinet.net.au/~jdekter/bikes/r20.html

His was a pretty slick mod too...

R-20: If it was easy, everyone would have one...

The report of wobble on the single speed site was not mine. My Tweny is rock solid with NO HINT of wobble or shimmy.
I love your Twenty page - I think I recognize about all of the photos of Twentys from hours of endless web surfing to find fellowship in Twenty owners.
Great work.
