Southern California - restaurent recommendation for lunch in Huntington Beach

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When I lived near there I never happened to go to the Huntington Beach Beer Company. Please try it and let me know how it goes. Mostly I and others in the Orange County Wheelmen and the Bicycle Club of Irvine ate on or near Lido Island in Newport Beach. Contact one of these clubs for advice. Try Bill or Dev Sellin of the BCI. I met them again this Spring when they were in my town for the TourdeCal.
The wife and I frequently ate at Ruby's Diner next to the Pier in Seal Beach to the north of HB.

Off of Beach Blvd. There's a really good Philly Cheese Steak place. It's about 1-2 miles from the beach. Don't remember exactly what it's called, but it was f'ing good.
The place actually sits in from the street, blue building if I remember correctly.

 Right... Haven't been to one place yet that serves them right...or even tasting right. Moved out here in '96 and I've given up searching. I just make sure to clog my arteries when I go back east to visit my folks in SE PA.
I might be willing to give the place a try if you can remember the name.
That philly place sucks. But right up the street they have a place called Tommy Pastrami that pretty dam good.

That Tommy Pastrami is no match for The Hat which is not in H.B. Nor are their pastrami sandwiches any match for the pastrami at De Simone in H.B.
Over the weekend it gets crowded along the H.B. pier area and Main Street. But there's plenty of places to eat, even a B.J. Pizza. For outdoor eating, being that you might be in cycling clothes, sweaty, try the cluster of restaurants near Sugar Shack. Then across the street closer to JAX bike shop is a Mexican restaurant, I forget the name, which is ok.

There's a Ruby's Diner at the end of the HB Pier. Typically a crowd and you have to wait for a table. Up main street is a BJs Pizzariea (good stuff!), and the aforementioned HB Beer Company is above Baskin Robbins - walk-up entrance is just north of Baskin Robbins on Main Street - burgers, sandwiches, munchies, and beer (of course!). The Restaurant across from Starbucks in the multi-use building is also good - can't remember the name right now.
Wahoo's fish tacos is just off PCH up from the pier. Always good fuel for the return trip.

Try John's on Golden West off the 405. I think the Xstreet is Warner? It's in a strip shopping center that has a large home furnishing store in it.
I've been dissapointed for years out here but this place I go to at least once a month. At times, they even have TastyCakes!!

Sorry, little flashback for me. Back in the early 80's I used to go to this little deli right off the beach and drink St Pauli Girls all the time. I loved that place. Cant even remember the name though.
The Hat is worth going out of your way for. Try the steak sandwich with avocado if you don't feel like having pastrami or roast beef. Add chili fries, grab some of those chile peppers, a large drink (free refills), and you're set.

One more - Chronic Taco at 11th & Orange (a few blocks inland from PCH, nrth f the HB Pier). Casual atmosphere, but good Mexican food (at least as good as you can find it inthe USA!)

Yes, the Hat. They give you a generous amount of fries too. I also like a nice sit down place to eat like Jerry's Famous Deli in Costa Mesa near South Coast Plaza. I think their pastrami is better than the Hat but the Hat has that total experience of a local down to earth place to eat, come as you are anytime.

Isn't the closest The Hat in Brea?
I went to Chronic Taco in Newport Beach on recommendations. I found a hair in my burrito and then left.
TK Burgers is pretty good. I always eat at the Costa Mesa location, but I figure the food is the same at the HB location.

TK Burger for the win. Its like 2 blocks south of the pier right on PCH next door to the Dairy Queen. Good burgers and i could swear they only hire cute girls who are well endowed.

Remembered the name - Jonh's Philly Grille.
Also, if you order "wet" fries at the Hat, order it on the side. The gravy stays warmer longer.

I'm curious if you've tried Philly's Best (it's a small chain out here.)
My one time in Philadelphia I didn't leave the airport (was flying back from Belgium), so I had to make do with a substandard "airport cheesesteak."

Los Primos Cantina on Adams, just East of Brookhurst...the start of many bikeforum rides.

FYI: TK Burgers is closed . . . at least if you're talking about that place in the old house next to Dairy Queen. But lots of other good stuff mentioned above, too
Los Primos Cantina on Adams at Brookhurst - its also not too far west of the SART. Not really spectacular food, but neither is my other suggestion above (Chronic Taco).
Another - For fill-yer-gut, good, high calorie stuff just like mom made, try the Sugar Shack. About 1 1/2 blocks in from PCH on Main Street. Open for breakfast and lunch. It gets pretty crowded on Sat/Sunday, but other days are fairly reasonable.
I also like the Longboard Cafe, 2 doors up Main Street from the Sugar Shack. Lunch and dinner (simple stuff), beer and wine, too :thumb:
. . and ONE more - Aloha Grill. Also on Main Street, upstairs from Luigi's and Starbucks. Casual.
. . . just ONE more (please!) - The italian place on 5th street with the fountain in front of it (its next to the police substation). Lunch and dinner (a little formal for dinner, so bike clothes might be a no-no).

Ahh, you obviously haven't had their lingua burrito:love:. You're right, but it's better than the standard fair that's about if you need something quick.

Perhaps they couldn't stay in business with all the customers gladly paying them Tuesday for a hamburger today.

Wimpy got whacked for this new monstrosity:

All the good ol' stuff from Huntington Beach's funky beach town days are almost gone. Huntington Beach is changing, developing the old downtwn as a "new, urban experience and weekend destination for the urban professional".
There's another development called "Pacific City" that's going in not far south of the pier. You can look that up on the city's website, too. It took out the Huntington Beach Motor Inn (with its 9-hole golf course) and the Grinder (great sit-down burger restaurant).

Beach and Garfield, the southwest quadrant where Steinmart and CVS drug store is located. There's a small little breakfast and lunch place called Ohana (Hawaiian for "family"). The center is L shaped and its tucked away in the corner. Stop by the water store a few doors away and talk with long time road rider Dave, the owner.

All good reco's, HOWEVER for Pork Fans I have two other recommendations:
1. Smokin' Mo's BBQ. Awesome pulled pork and fantastic fries. Just a block past the S-bux.
2. Right accross from Mo's is El Ranchito. Try their Botanas or Carnitas platters.

Alessa's about 2 miles South of Hunington on the 101. Really great Italian food, made by an Italian chef, who has also recently taken up cycling I think.

Alessa also owns the next door liquor store which sub contracts out the Mexican hot food stand inside.
Breakfast at Alessa, big thing is their makeover of french toast. I don't think you'll find a mix there. Patrons are mostly N.B. crowd for dinner. Italian in H.B? Try the place on Adams and Beach Blvd with the jazz entertainment. Cavallino or something like that. Been there twice, been to Alessa once.
Risotto at Cavallino is very good. Check out their web sites, both of them, then make a choice.
