Classic & Vintage - Raleigh w/campy... what is it?

I've got some begginer questions for the experts. This is the first bike of any real value I have bought... and I only paid $35.00!!! I am not asking the value, and I don't care, because I love it and I am keeping it. Here are a few things I do know about it, sorry if I use the wrong terms, I am still very new to this.

- it has a campagnolo Nuovo Gran Sport drive train.

- the headset, hubs and BB are campagnolo.

- the brakes are Weinmann 605

- the rims are Mavic with IRC triathlon tires

- the pedals are comagnolo gran sport

- it has a compagnolo seat post. The saddle is not a Brooks, all I see is the word turbo so I don't know
what it is if anything at all.

The frame is by Raleigh with campy dropouts. The lugs are painted. The serial number is P8006598 so as far as I can tell it is a 78 (or 88?) made in worksop in november. The guy who sold it to me bought it new... He says it is a competition frame, but as far as I can tell, the competition didnt come in red. Also the decals don't look the same, I saw a prestige on here that looks similar, but I don't think they came with campy equipment. There seems to be quite a bit missing off the frame like a pump or water bottle cage, did these come with anything from the dealer? Any info helps as I know little about these. I have cleaned and repacked some old schwinns, seeing as this is much much different do you have any cleaning words of caution? Last question, there are some nasty rust spots on the frame, I don't want to paint it, and I don't need it to look perfect, how can I best slow the rust and touch up the paint. Oh yeah, I hate the bar tape, I could use some suggestions, I only have 2 requests - Traditional style and buget friendly.

Here are some pics:

Raleigh Competition G.S. with a respray and a severely damaged front end (kinked top tube). Campagnolo Nuovo Gran Sport components were stock on the G.S. (hence the extra designation added after the Huret models from pre-'76).

Look for a replacement frame to hang those components on. Save the fork if it isn't bent.

You still got a fantastic bargain, with another frame that'll make a brilliant road bike.

Well, the frame damage is a bummer. I do notice that the picture makes it look way more bent. Still though, 35.00 for the components I'm still happy. I wonder what a competion or similar frame may cost, check ebay I guess. Anyone looking to sell one maybe??

Found one for 100.00 on ebay. Of course I have to make the money for it first. Oh well, I will just put all of this on my Schwinn Suburban frame. I'm kidding, don't kill me

Nothing wrong with that, but it would not make sense (that is, if it is a Chicago-built electroforged Suburban frame, and not the later lugged machines of the '80s). You would have to purchase a three-piece bottom bracket adapter, the FD clamp of the Campagnolo derailer is too large in diameter, seatpost won't fit, neither will the handlebar stem (21.1 vs 22.2), and I do not believe the Campagnolo calipers (unless they are the long-reach variants - which weren't so long at that) have the amount of reach required for the Suburban.

Sorry if I'm bursting your bubble here. All the more reason to hunt up a nice frame though :thumb:

Ha, I really was just kidding. Seems kind of backwards to put all these light parts on a heavy frame. I think I would rather sell the suburban to raise money for a frame. I have a collegiate that I ride most of the time anyway, it's just a lower end suburan, so why have two.

Well, something similar has been done, but it was an old '62 Continental frame. :lol: It actually was quite fun and occasionally garners a look or two.

Once I was out riding it and came up on a guy riding his CF Dura Ace $$$$ bike. It was April so there was still snow along the sides of the road. After riding and chatting for 5 or so miles (and I could tell he kept glancing at what was hanging on my Schwinn), he asked; "Is that your winter bike?" :roflmao2:

You have to fill me in on what this means. BTW that is a nice looking continnental, the tape and paint together look great.

N= the number of bikes you have. N+1= the number of bikes you need.

A bud of mine has a Trek 600, the one with fully DB 531, with that Campy Nuovo Gran Sport gruppo - it makes for a very very light steel bike, even with a Brooks Pro on top! I think the set is actually lighter than Nuovo Record, at least it should be, considering the 3-pin crank v. 5-pin, and that the pedals have aluminum cages rather than chromed steel.

Get even a medium good (such as the Trek) double butted steel frame to hang those parts on, and I think you'll be pleased with the results.
