Metric century next Sat. with the OCW.

Course descrip. reads "..very hilly going up into Oak Glen..." Apples at the rest stop...etc.

Anybody done this before? How "hilly" is hilly out there?

Can I down 1/2 an apple pie and still finish like a blazing road campionissimo?

I like their apple pie better than at Julian in San Diego county.

You obviously don't know how HUGE their apple pies are! You're talking like 4 lbs. of apple pie (for a half pie).

Nice, I'll have to hammerhard the first half to get my hunger up. I love apple pie.

Yeah they are good. The apples inside are apple chunks not slices. Friggen huge! I'm pretty sure you can order it by the slice though up at Los Rios at the very top of the hill. Enjoy!

Quite a few of us have done BA. This is the profile which includes one of the climbs, OakGlen. Not sure of the ride you speak of but it's hilly out there!:D

Yep...it's steep for sure. I've suffered just about everytime I've done this ride, but then I'm no mountain goat. If you go up from the Yucaipa side, it's a long steady grind that never seems to end. If climbing from the Cherry Valley side, it's much harder and especially steep the last couple of miles. But the apple pie is well worth it and what's nice, you'll be going downhill after stuffing yourself. I think Law's Restaurant has the best, but this time of the year, plan of waiting in line for awhile. Enjoy!

I live just down the hill from Oak Glen in Redlands, and it's an occasional ride up and over. I tend to avoid this time of year because of the traffic. It's only busy for a short while (when the pies/cider are best) and then we get to enjoy a beautiful country climb, free of bad traffic for the rest of the year. The Redlands Classic Pro race used to have a stage that would go up and over it as well.

I don't know exact numbers but I think it's around 5-7% grade off and on up the front (west) side. And it's around 5+ miles from the bottom (Stater Bros. Market) to the top (Rios Rancho).

Oh, the pie IS worth the ride, and you'll be smart to take the opportunity to sit down and have some. My advice is get your pie at Oak Tree Village before you get to the top. There's a tiny plaza on the left side (going up) with a bakery that makes a better pie (IMHO) than Rios Rancho does. They're all good, but the pie I got from oak tree village was the best apple pie I've ever had.

Send us a ride report. I'll be interested to see what you think. It's a personal favorite for those of us who live close by. Oh, and if you go down the East side, and then turn right on Wildwood Cyn. Road you'll hit a short and STEEP section where we've hit 50+ mph a few times. :thumb:

Nice sunny, hot day for OCW Fall Metric.

I think there were about 50 riders. Most people left Sylvan Park at 9am.

90+ deg. and the final 10 mi. up Oak Glen Blvd. put a 'bit of bother' on me.

Took a break a Los Rios Ranchos rest stop. The summit was swarming with cars for the apples and such.

The last mile w/o a hard shoulder got a bit dicey at times. Cars moving in/out of parking lots made for some interesting exchanges.

My day ended about 6 miles down Oak Glen. Had 5 frigging flats and had to call for the sag...after walking 1.5 for a phone...forgot mine. Had punctured both front/rear tires with thorns. Then had my rim tape fail and got the others on the rim side of the tube....sheesh. Weird day.

Thanks to the nice redhead at 'Retro Reds' Antique place for letting me use her cell. Really cool place. Will be back to check that place out.

Thanks to Roger and the SAG guys for getting me back to Redlands.

OCW run a nice, organized event. Thanks.

Next year...I'll be back..cool looking places and great climbing.

(Hope the route slip comes out readable. I'm not having any luck getting the thing sized right.)
