First of all get a Bianchi :D
Then what you do is ride, find friends to ride and train with, or find a club in your area.
After riding and learning your gearing and after some training try riding in organized group rides, they have centuries all the way down to 10 miles... you can get experience in mass starts and riding in packs and break aways this way.
In time when you decide you are serious you can get your license with USCF and start doing the number of required races, crits and so on...
Good luck, but REMEMBER, Buy a BIANCHI first thing :D

Go to bike shops and inquire about the racing clubs in your area. Contact the racing clubs and ask them if they have a coach and how many juniors ride with the club. You will progress more rapidly with coaching and with peers to ride with. Get a good book on racing like SERIOUS CYCLING by Ed Burke. Buy it. You will live in it. Beg/borrow/steal a suitable bike to ride(see something like BICYCLING magazines latest buyers guide for budget road/racing bikes available new), and GO DO IT! Ride with the club every chance you get. Don't be discouraged if you get dropped and end up riding home alone. Don't be sensitive if someone doesn't greet you like your best friends do. Don't worry about anything else. Just ride. It will all fall into place.

nick, go to www.ne-bra.org for a start, Wells Ave in West Newton is probably the best place to start racing in Massachusetts. Find a club to ride with-they'll hopefully teach you all of the basics (though sometimes I wonder). As for a good bike, I'd go for something aluminum with 105...if you dont mind me me asking where do you live in MA?

What up dude. I am 17 and I just started racing last year. My advise to you is to get measured first to see what size you need then get a used bike. You can get a bike with better stuff then a brand new bike. Good luck.

Ebay is a great way to get a nice deal.. The best deals I have gotten are from people who are local to me and I always ask if I win can I pick up so it saves you shipping and the hassle of having to put the bike back together.. Make pick up of item a contingency of your bid.. I have gotten some smokin deals this way.. There is a feature of the left side of the screen that says items near me, try it and get a good deal..
