I am considering buying the boardwalk, switching out the rear wheel for a freewheel and adding a V brake.
Nashbar has a nice deal on a 451 wheel right now, wondering if the bike will have enough clearance for it?
The V-brakes won't fit 451 wheels, for sure. Unless you go for expensive ones like paul's motolite. They'll cost more than the bike.
You might want to look at caliper brakes instead.

I have had my own modified Boardwalk S1 for 5 years now. I changed the drivetrain to a AW three speed internal hub and added a simple single pivot rear brake in place of the old back pedaled one. See my close up photo here:

If I could do it again, I would have opted for a double pivot rear brake.

Thanks for the input, I'm definitely considering a caliper brake now. But I still wonder if 451 wheel will fit 'cause the clearance for the rear wheel seems pretty tight.
Where I live it is much easier to get good tyres and more importantly tubes for 20" rather than 451 rims.
Have you checked this in your area?

a 451 rim will be 22.5 mm 'taller' than the stock 406 size, (451mm – 406mm = 45mm ÷ 2 = 22.5mm) so that's how much extra space you'll need to fit it in the current frame; fitting a skinnier tyre (which is likely since 451s are usually 1 1/4" road tyres) may help a little with this.
My hunch is this *may* be possible but likely a squeeze.
