My LBS sold me a near new Shogun Samurai for $75.00, sporting a full & complete 105 group with Biopace and Nitto bars and stem. The frame is Tange Prestige, good double butted stuff. While at first glance I didn't quite care for the bike, I really needed the wheels for another project, and the price was right.

Well, I brought it home, and started thinking. My son, who's relatively athletic, has shown declining interest in biking in the last year or so, with his ride being a Chinese Raleigh MTB tank of sorts. He doesn't do stunts and jumps nor does he tear up the trails with his buddies. He kept asking me about how fast I go, and why skinny tires make it all so much better. Maybe he's ready to do some road riding?

The frame is 48cm ctc, a little big, but with the saddle jammed all the way down, and the horizontal reach shortened with a MTB bar I figured it worthy of a try. To make a long story short, he loves it. Weekends and evenings are now best spent with dad on a road ride. And he can go relatively fast. Downtube shifters and 12 speed 52-42 / 13-30 gearing seems to be fine for him.

I cross my fingers that this might be lasting passion, but are also quite aware of the vagaries of child rearing...

Today enjoying the fall colors along the river:

Fantastic post! Thanks for sharing; great use for an old bike.

My son's a bit older than yours (18), but I got him a vintage Panasonic touring bike to take to college and he ended up riding all summer after his senior year in high school. He hadn't been on his mountain bike for years, and riding a (relatively) speedy road bike was a whole new experience for him.

And I felt *much* better buying a vintage bike for him than buying an Xmart bike or spending my money (or his) on an expensive new bike we didn't know he would like.

Again, great story, thanks!

it is really amazing how the MTB market has made the kids road bike nearly extinct. my sons motivation has quadrupled after getting this easily driven bike.

bengeboy, ever come this way to ride?

I just got done setting up a small frame GT Timberline for my youngest son. Slick tires and single speed. So much better than most anything made for a kid.

Road bikes started making a comeback with Lance's success and popularity. 5 years ago at the local Target : all MTBs, cruisers and choppers. 3 years ago at the same Target I spotted a couple of road bikes!!!! I was just at Target, but didn't venture over to the bike section...I'll have to see what's on the shelves on my next visit.

Of course those Target rides weren't as nice as your son's new ride. How long 'til fake fixie-style bikes are on the shelves at Target??? Pink and yellow deep rims and all, but with reflectors in the spokes instead of cards.

I say you turn it into a fixie for him. ;)
