Touring - didn't get a response in "general cycling"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

so i thought i'd try here.

i'm going to puerta vallarta next month. i've found a few bicycle tours that i'm interested in. however, i like unstructured, spur of the moment rides. i'd like to rent a bike and just ride when/where i feel. i've been looking for blogs, etc. to find out where i should/shouldn't ride. any suggestions? i'm not looking to tour on my own. i'd just like to ride for a few hours per day.

You should check out http://vallartainfo.com/index.html, it is probably the best place for info on PV. They have a pretty active bulletin board where you should be able to get a response.

I toured from PV along the cost to Manzanillo and from there up to Colima.
Riding withing a 20km radius of PV is scary; heavy traffic, narrow roads - no shoulders.
Coblestones make riding into and out of PV very unconfortable and dangerous.
I dont recommend daytrips out of PV.
I'll never do it again.

I'd rate most of the Pacific Coast of Mexico as hard/scary to ride. I've been to PV and rode bikes in Baja and honestly wouldn't do it again. (take this from a guy who isn't afraid riding in NYC)

With that said, it has been done and many hardy souls enjoyed it.

thanks for all the info.

one of the people coming with rides somewhat regularly. however, he really has no interest in doing any cycling while we're there...so i'm on my own. at this point, i think i'll probably do a couple organized tours. one is a 20 mile ride in the mtns. sounds cool. maybe i'll rent a bike a day or two just to ride around near the hotel while the rest of the group gets snookered on the beach.
