Today, well, starting from yesterday night, was my first ever night cycling experience. I just thought I would share it with you guys. I've posted in the Training and Nutrition section about preparing for it. Okay, more about the night cycling. It is a night cycling event for youths, from churches all over Singapore. It is slightly competitive, though it was more of fun for all of us.

Yesterday, I brought clothes, just to prepare for the rain. However it was never put to use, but still I'm glad I brought it since you never know what will happen. I was the only few guys across the whole level riding a road bike. Comparatively, I'm much fitter than the rest of the guys in my team, not to mention the equipment that helped me out a whole deal. We have safety vehicles guiding us, and guiding the traffic around us. That is so cool, it was like in the Tour de France? lol. Very fun indeed. I was often the last guy in the group and for safety purposes, we ride in a paceline, and we are not allowed to ride side by side. The reason I'm the last man is to make sure everyone stays together and that no one is left behind, so I am supposed to take note of anyone leaving the group which no one did. Other than that, I gave warnings about traffic from behind and give clearance to cross. The other guys looked out a lot for me too.

My team was supposedly a strong team. At least that is what the safety crew told us. At least stronger than the other team starting off from the same church. Thus, we were called to let them pass us and 'protect' them from behind. Things did get a bit messy later on, but it was fine. So we went off from churches to churches, had games there which were very fun, and the girls were nice to watch too. lol, I just felt some of them were too flirty, didn't pay much attention to them.

Lots of close encounters during the ride. There was this driver in the wrong lane and he was close to knocking us down.. furthermore he honked at us. Certain times we had to cross the road which were dangerous cause the roads were slightly complex. Everything was cool in the end. Just ended up very tired because the whole thing lasted about 7 hours plus, we only cycled about 30plus km. Including the trip home.. it was a total of 44.7km for me.

I'm definitely looking forward to another of such event, and possibly be part of the mobile facilitators, it was really thanks to them that everything went well. I had loads of fun!

Lol.. is that the only interesting thing? Just wondering maybe you guys can share any of your night cycling experience too.

Well, it was actually more towards the end of the thing, our 2nd last stop. We were supposed to play this game, it required us to line up any thing we have to a certain length. The certain length was decided by the roll of the dice, add 2 rolls up and multiply by 10. Since we had 2 teams, we decided to join up and do a total of 150m, whereas if we didn't it was 60 for us and 70 for them. Of course we were rather intelligent.. so we were using the fire hose, the fire extinguisher, one very long bench etc. The girls though were telling us to take off our clothes to meet the length. Lol.. especially this particular one.. one that you would most probably notice first. Well, yes, there is this one, wearing shorts, and she was the one leading us in the game. She was actually standing somehow close to me most of the time.. and I wasn't really able to do anything for the team because my stuff are up there with my bike and we were playing the game at the carpark basement. While she was saying it, the others weren't really paying attention to other, especially not the 'taking off clothes' part. So she could be hinting at me... for whatever reason I am not bothering at all. Lol.. I just didn't really find her too attractive and anyway earlier on in the day, something else did happen. I won't really mention about that something else, but yeah, that's about it. She got a scolding from the priest later on at the youth centre because she was flirting away with other guys while the priest was talking. Yeah, you should be able to tell her extent.. lol

Just an update, I can't believe what happened today. That flirty girl I was talking about.. I think she is just about to be my junior, she has been posted to my school.

Anyway, I hope people could post their own experiences too.

My own personal opinion while in Singapore was that the beautiful women there left most of the worlds ladies in the dust. :D

Lol, are you serious? That was a dig right? They are beautiful women, but there are cute girls around, for my age, cute girls are the choice. Hehe, anyway, I don't think this thread should start evolving into some dating forum?

Haven't anyone cycled at night before? I don't think it is that popular? Is it due to the late nights and thus making one more tired? Night cycling should not be used for training right? Only a joy ride I suppose.

No dig intended, the multi-cultural influences present in Singapore provide for many stunning ladies.
I ride quite a bit at night and quite enjoy it, but mainly in rural areas or on strictly bike paths so my night experiences are probably not relevant to yours, I also work nights regularly so my 'coping' factor with staying up late isn't similar either, night is day for me in that regards.

I don't see too many cute girls out when I ride in the very early morning! Although there are some joggers out too.

I ride a 12 mile loop in the morning (when it is warm enough) and I start at about5:15 AM so it is still rather dark out.

The imortant theam is "see and be seen!!" I use a Riterider Trail Rat II and an led light on my helmet so I can see my computer. I also have blinker lights on the back of my helmet and bike. Wearing yellow or reflective cloths helps with visability too.

Sorry, being 54 & married I am not too focused on the teenaged girls anymore.

That's right oxologic, keep them stories about the flirty girls coming!

Hehe. I ride around with a blinker front and back and I'm pretty good on city streets. If I'm on the trail going slow, I have a 5watt light that runs on 4AA batteries that does pretty good, all I have to do is see 10-15 ft ahead of me for large branches and stuff. If I'm going fast, I have a 35 watt dual light system that lets me see 40-50ft ahead. The thing I like most about night riding sometimes is just going slow, put on some music and I have the whole road to myself. It's relaxing sometimes to just go slow and enjoy the air instead of hammering it out.

I just took a night ride. Five miles on a nature trail here in Illinois at 10 PM. I saw a possum. It didn't flirt with me, it just ran off under a bush.

I commute to work at 6AM & its dark during the Winter months, Its just full daylight on my morning ride this week. I use a yellow blinkie in front, a red blinkie in back & a Lumotec 3 watt headlight driven by a Dynohub. I also wear a reflective vest. There isn't much auto traffic but I do see a few other cyclists. Not many girls out there at 6AM. Don

Lol, the only reason where there were girls out on my night was that it was a organised event and they were supposed to be at the stations. No really good looking girls out cycling with the group of us, probably over here the good looking girls don't ride bikes.

What's the point of having a flashing headlight? I have that function but I don't use it. Yah, I think it is really a lot more relaxing out at night, and you have lots of road to yourself. It is really cool, can't wait till after July when I'll start my transition and start building up a really strong and powerful aerobic profile. Maybe then I'll ride more at night as well as in the day.
