I'm planning a visit to NYC in May and I'm looking for any recommendations for good road bike shops to visit while I'm there. Thanks in advance.

I don't know wether the shop is good or not, but have a look at www.racycles.com

Quite a lot of stuff on "virtual" store and you can already have an idea about the prices.

I went twice in New York to buy a camera and some lenses and discovered that you could find a price difference of more than 20% on the same stuff in 2 different stores, so my advice is:

know what you want to buy
know the "real" price
know how much it would cost you at home
and...don't forget to add the sale tax!

RA Cycles in park slope has a great inventory. i used to live a block away and it was my local shop.

i never found their service or work to be all that great, though.

Bike Renaissance on Columbus and 81 (i think.. it's right behind the museum of natural history) is decent. lots of high end stuff. i'm not so hot on that store.

i like Sid's on 34th bt 2nd and 3rd, i believe. nice and knowledgeable staff, nice selection of stuff, including clothing.

Conrads on Tudor place (follow 41street east, past 3rd ave, up to the top of the hill) is a great shop. small, but some nice frames and what's considered by many to be the best service in town.

there are some fun shops downtown like bicycle habitat on lafayette street (between prince and spring) and bike works (on rivington and ridge on the lower east side) that deal with the grittier fixie and messenger set.

Any suggestions for shops on Long Island? Also, what's the riding there like?

If you've got a little time before your trip to Long Island, it would be worth gtting hold of the county's cycling map... Look here for contact / request info and a PDF version:

I haven't done any riding out that way myself yet... but I will be this summer!

I love Gotham. It's in downtown manhattan between west broadway and duane street near the world trade center site.
You can also try Bayridge Bikes if you're in brooklyn, they're at 89th and 3rd avenue.

If you're at Gotham, ask for Joe, he sold bikes to me and my gf, really nice guy.

Long Island is flat and busy - for the most part. That said there are some great places to ride, many on the hilly north shore.

You can start from Queens and ride the Triangle ride out of Little Neck and head up to Oyster Bay and back. Strong riders, very quick pace.

Shops are many and include Brands in Wantagh - big
and Bike Junkie in Bethpage - small.

Enjoy.
