I have to go to Italy for work in a few weeks. I'm going by myself and have managed to get my company to spring the bill for a few extra days there. Have any foosters been there that can give some travel recommendations?

Well, you are in decent wine country. Bardolino, Soave and Valpolicella are made in that region.

Hotel Ca d'Oro (http://www.venicehotelcadoro.com/en/index.htm) is where we stayed last year, and it was awesome. Great location.

Our best meal in Venice was at a cafe, instead of one of the proper 'restaurants.' You'll be there at a time in the year that the tourism tides may be subsided some, which will help :)

Enjoy!

how much time do you have for sight seeing?

the academia really should be a must. i suppose the doge's palace. a vaparetto around the islands. a negroni at harry's bar has it's charms. the architecture biennale (http://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/exhibition/) might be worth a visit, if for no better reason than to walk through the gardini, and see the pavilions.

vis-a-vis restaurants, the best one i ate at was way off the beaten path. the worst are usually by the train station, or san marco.

I will certainly be having some wine while there. Lots of it. Call me a lush.

10 days total. 5 days of work. 2.5 for travel and recovery. So 4 days of play time. I will certainly try to check out the academia. Thanks for the input.

a short trip away, in padua, is the Scrovengi Chapel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena_Chapel), where you can see Giotto at his finest.

I must be getting old, the name of the place we stayed 4 yrs ago is escaping me. It was a bed and breakfast type place on, I can't even remember the name of the campo, but basically 2-3 blocks from the Rialto Bridge. Around 100 euros a night, pretty cheap.

All the best food was in obscure places w/ no windows. We learned to avoid any place that only had bottled wine (vs wine on tap)

menus in 4 languages is also a warning sign.
