Just wondering what the scuttlebut is out there on Mavic Open Pro rims for strength/durability? Specifically, I want a light, quality rim for 100K rides (80%)that will also do me occasional loaded touring (20%). I was looking at them yesterday in a shop and with their welded seam, double pinning and double eyelets, the Open Pro seemed very well made and tough. They're skinny for touring but could take 28 or 32 tires I was told. Can someone advise me? (I also looked at the cheaper MA3 but they are not pinned or welded and the joint on the braking surface is quite visible and does not fill me with confidence.)

I weigh 275lbs and have put the OP's on my bike. I use the 32 hole rim with Ultegra hubs. 1500 miles later they are as true as the day I brought the out of the shop. For the money I think you would be hard pressed to find a better more durable rim.

Loaded touring? You might want to look at a beefier rim.

Forgot to say that I am 5'10", 165 lbs. That I would get 36 hole rims. What would be the best choice for spokes?

I'd agree with that assessment. I have Open Pros on a couple of my bikes and have had no problems with them. Having said that, while they do have a reputation for durability, I don't think they're designed for loaded touring.

Maybe you should consider having two sets of wheels, if your budget allows for that?

cxp22s or 33s might be ok for loaded touring no?

maybe?

Been using open pros for years.. Definitely get the 36 hole version and SUP's if they are available.. They are solid rims, get a good builder and use DT 14 or 15 gauge spokes.. Don't try to go light go for durable, its for touring anyway.. I would say the CXP 33's are just as strong and they also make 36 hole versions. They are just a little more expensive.. If you are going for a long tour, make sure that your builder gives you a couple extra spokes, just in case...

open pro's really show their strength when the roads you are riding are less than smooth. great rim. never a problem with these crappy pot holed midwest roads.

I bet a pair of OPs would be fine.

If you're nervous about them, and don't mind 60 or so more grams per wheel, the MA-3s would probably be fine. I've never had any MA-3s, but it's predecessor, the MA-2 was indestructable. And they, too, will definitely handle a range of tires. Using them, I've put lots of miles on everything from an x23s to x35s. Personally, I think that width rim is ideal if you want to run an x32.
