Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi folks
Age 58, running and indoor rowing for 28 years or so. Started cycling with local club last July, around 3 times 50 milers a week, as well as still running. I have always been around 140-142 lbs and can eat anything all the time. Since cycling my weight has been dropping, around 138 now, and folk saying I look skinny!
I am never hungry, eat regular, but this cycling certainly burns the calories. BTW our rides are at a good lick, I aim to TT next season, and have always been competitive. Still a good standard master in running. Thanks all

Your upper body is used less in cycling than running, for one.
Also, have you changed your diet at all since you've started?

If you're still running as much as you used to, and you added cycling to your exercise routine, the lost weight is just due to the added exercise. I assume you know this? If you don't want to lose the weight ( a whole 2-4 pounds!), you'll have to eat a few more calories.
You're not "skinny" at 140-142 pounds? You better watch your ass down south, they'll eat you down there for a snack.......

My body weight easily fluctuates that amount during a day. I would not sweat it.
138 is not too low for 5'8"
I lost too much weight when I started cycling, I didn't learn to eat enough fast enough and dropped down to 115, with all kinds of eating dissorders on the way down and back up. Eat. Your body will thank you.
Edit: although I wouldn't worry too much yet. You may just be dehydrated and/or glycogen depleted. You can be otherwise well hydrated, but if you are glycogen depleted, you can be at least 5 pounds down.

If only I had that problem, I think I have plateaued. I dropped from 235 in April of 2008 to 209 now, but can't get the metabolic engine going again to drop the last 19. I am 6 foot even and while being 209 is great, as I was up to 277 a few years ago, I really want to break the 200 mark.
