I've been waiting for this, even if I'm still confussed about if it's a '72 or '73 Superior. Installed a nice vintage Campagnolo crankset, all new stainless spokes and a nice set of Michelin tires. While I look for an OEM Nervar crankset and BB.

Hah! That's a lot nicer than the OEM Nervar. I would leave it on there.

The bike should be 1976-1978. The '72-'73 version was a Sports Tourer.
What is the four digit number stamped into the headbadge?

The 4 digit is 2236. What the chance someone installed a Superior decal on what should have been a Sports Tourer. The MH prefix of the serial number says it's was built December or 1972 so in either case it should be a Sports Tourer in stead of Superior. How could it be a 1976 with the MH serial number prefix?

This may be something like a factory defect.

As Sierra mentioned, Schwinn appears to have used Sports Tourer Frames, saved for warranty purposes, as part of the production of the Superiors 1976-78. Then in 1979 they offered a very rare frame called the Sport Limited. This marked the end of the fillet brazed Schwinns.

This used up the rest of the raw materials used for this line of bikes. There is a brief description of the Sport Limited here on Bob Hufford's site: http://www.geocities.com/sldatabook/detail7579.html#1979 I've only seen one ever pictured here on C&V in the last 3 years.
