Training & Nutrition - Looking for the quietest stationary trainer ...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I live in New York and have become a bit of a wuss during the winter months and I also have a baby on the way, so I'm going to be stuck inside more than I used to be. Because of this I'm in the market for a good indoor stationary trainer for my road bike (Specialized Allez). I live in a 4 unit building on the second floor so I have neighbors below me. So, I'm looking for the quietest trainer that won't wake up my neighbors downstairs or my wife and baby down the hall. I've been reading that the fluid trainers are the quietest and most people seem to like them. Anyone have any good advice on which trainer to buy for the quietest ride without sacrificing a solid workout? Also, anyone have any advice on good DVD's for while I'm on the trainer? Thanks!

I've owned fluid (cyclops), magnetic (tacx flow & minoura), and inertia (1up).
With the 1up, my fans make more noise than the trainer. It's practically dead silent.
The Kurt Kinetic is also a very good trainer (sold on 1up's website, too), though it
may not be as quiet based on some of the reviews/comparisons I've read.
Important as well is to put either a rubber mat or some old carpeting (or both) underneath
the trainer to muffle any noise through the floor.

Your choice of tires will influence the noise factor. I have a Performance fluid trainer that I use with slicks. Ditto on the rugs and mats for sound reduction. I live in a house so noise is not an issue for me.
I also recommend a water rower. It provides an awesome workout with very little noise save for the swishing of water. Check Amazon for various brands.
