At the very end of yesterday morning's commute I almost got hit by a car. I was crossing Constitution Ave at 14th Street (one of only 4 intersections I have to cross), with the light, in the crosswalk, when a Mercedes stood on the gas while at the red light. I saw and heard this and swerved to the right. She must have just missed me as I was only a few feet from her bumper. I thought that we had made eye contact, but she must have looked in my direction and completely overlooked me. I'm guessing she saw me at the last second, realized her mistake, and hit the brakes. Fortunately I was carrying enough speed to allow me to pass, although it was close, she would have T-boned me. In all my years of riding, this is the closest I've come to getting hit. It shook me up a little when I thought of how close I had come to a potentially broken leg or worse. Ironic too, after I had just posted a thread about the safety of road riding which has received very mixed responses.
