Manufacturer, Retailer, Survey and Consumer Feedback - Order Problems from Bikesdirect (resolved)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi,

I suggested to a friend of mine recently that he order the new bike he was shopping for from Bikesdirect, as I had known a few people who ordered from them successfully, the price for a reasonable component bike is great, and I had been impressed by the response to problems on these forums by the bikesdirect guy.

After first having some strange and time consuming hassle with paypal, where bikesdirect said that the payment had not gone through successfully, but my friends paypal account said that it HAD, the bike finally arrived today. My friend stayed home from work to make sure that he could sign for it and I had planned to leave work early to help him get it set up. He just called me to tell me not to come over, as many of the components included with the bike were NOT the ones listed for the bike online. Instead generic/lower shelf parts had replaced many of the advertised components. Apparently this includes: substituted V brakes for discs, different fork, different handlebars, different cranks. After calling customer service, he was not feeling that this was likely to be resolved any time soon. They told him to take photos to document the fact that the wrong components were installed. It is unclear if they are going to make him ship the bike back and then wait, again, for delivery of the correct bike.

I am feeling quite guilty about telling him this was a good idea, as he has had nothing but trouble with his order, and now it looks like he will still not be able to ride for quite a while.

I had not seen these responses before. Yes, it was successfully resolved. They did not, in the end, require proof of the mistake, but shipped off the correct model/component bike and helped him get the wrong one shipped back. It was a hassle, because due the extra time it took, my friend just barely got the bike before leaving the country (with the bike), but it was successfully resolved.

Sounds like they did their best to resolve the issue. Everyone makes mistakes. Rather than judge a company by their mistakes, consider how they fix them instead.

I really would like to believe that Brian, but after working in customer service for much of my life, once a mistake is made, the mistake can never really be fixed.

I haven't found that to be completely true. But there are some people who simply will not be satisfied.
