Vintage bikes rarely pop up here in Hawaii, and I check Craigslist daily (hourly) for when they do. So I was surprised to find this today http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/bik/886776692.html looks to me like a PX-10 (compared to this one http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=424497&highlight=10+px), but I am really not a Peugeot expert. I think I'll go take a look at it today if I can. Anything I should be looking for in particular? PX-10s should be Reynolds 531, am I correct?

Looks like a Mid 70's PX10. I'd be calling the seller and going right over to see it. Price is probably OK for your market. Appears to be well maintained, especially if it has been in the islands for many years. Is it your size? Go get it.

Thanks! I have a good friend who loves Peugeots. I told him about it, and he's gunna give the seller a call. Pictures if we get it!

Buy it! Looks very servicable. Price is right.

Someone will always have one that's nicer, but these bikes are meant to be ridden and I think over-rated as "collectable." Of course, why then do some guys here have two or three? LOL

I think I see non-original pedals and wheels.

Stem too? I still have the death stem on my U08.

All could add to useability (pedals look bad) but detract from collectability. I think it's not too hard to track down rigial equipment if you must.

Stem looks original. That style of forged stem was used on the early 'LE' models as well as the later models.

The stem is the original type. My PX10 came with one. My PA10 is wearing it now. I have another one, but the special clamp bolt disappeared.

Just took a look at it. It was in okay condition, but not as good as I was hoping. Also, the front derailleur was trashed. It definitely needed some maintenance, so I figured I'd just save my $275 for something a little nicer.

There's always a right price between a willing seller and a willing buyer. Don't look back.

I don't know where you are, but around here a PX-10 frame and fork in good shape would be bought quickly for $275. The shape of the components comes into play at $400.00 or more.

It takes allot of will power to walk away from a deal that might not come around again soon.. I walked on an '83 trek 720 in my size yesterday, and I've been looking for one for quite a while, but the price wasn't right for the condition it was in. :thumb: Like tysonb said, Don't look back!

Yeah, it was my size which is kind of a bummer... but I already have a nice bike that's in MUCH better condition and with much nicer components. This would just be a nice bike to add to the collection. I'm a college student though, and $275 is a lot to be spending on my income. Besides, I was really looking for one with nicer detailing (Nervex) or in better condition.

$275 for a real PX-10 in the right size would sound like a steal for many forum members, I suppose. The french bike experts who know about current eBay prices will probably chime in (correct me if I'm wrong, Poguemahone).
To my best knowledge Hawaii has very sparse vintage bike supply, and a PX-10 is a rare bird even on the mainland. Therefore a price in the NYC or Portland range wouldn't be outrageous.
And if it's about a broken front derailleur - buddy, that's $30 if you're not too smart (one-digit amount if you are).

From the value POV I'd say you made a mistake.
So YES - from that perspective you should look back!

But - if you're shy of money I can totally understand you're decision. Do not consume what you can't afford.

And don't forget the additional expense he would have to pour into it.

Reminds me of my '70 all-chrome Paramount. I snagged it for $350, but I've put over $400 into it so far, with about $250 to go. Not such a good deal after all, eh?

$1000 for an '70 all-chrome Paramount isn't cheap, but isn't a rip-off either - if it's in appropriate condition.
If it's perfect, some aficionados would snatch it in a minute.

(Even if I'd never put that much in a vintage bike - they can be made rather pretty with few $$, if you just polish, polish, polish ... :p)

+1 There's a certain amount of inherent value that will always be there versus buying something else that will continue to depreciate.

OE front derailleurs are no more than $20. I know for a fact a Dura Ace derailleur can be had for $10 plus shipping......

I wont turn this into a Paramount debate but an all painted one missing alot of the original parts just went for $1100.

To calirfy...Paramount track bikes are bringing big bucks.....

Except for the fact that it has taken a year and a half to source out the same parts to make it as perfect as said $1,000 eBay bike:

Cinelli old-logo 1A stem
Cinelli old-logo Giro D'Italia handlebars
Mavic Module 3 rims w/DT spokes laced to Nuovo Record HF hubs
Weinmann 999 brake calipers, Schwinn Approved variants
Weinmann 999 caliper yokes + NOS straddle cables
Weinmann 999 brake levers w/proper Q/R tab and lever stamping
Proper Weinmann gum hoods
Weinmann brake pads
Nuovo Record pulley wheel replacements
IRC Roadwinner II tires ($25/ea - only thing that looks right on this bike)

Plus the following that needed to be replaced which I happened to have on hand:

NR BB spindle (pitted)
NR FD, pre-CSPC (stripped)

Not to mention what I have yet to purchase:

Replacement Paramount decals (red)
Replacement 27.2 NR seatpost (no fluting)
MKS Sylvan road pedals
MKS Sylvan toe clips with leather tips
Red toe straps

When all is said and done, the $1,000 eBay bike would have been far more efficient.

That may be, but I've also seen Peugeot UO-8s go for nearly $400 and bike boom low-end Nishikis for the same. Don't get me wrong, I love these bikes, but they are not worth that much, at least to me. Schwinns on the other hand, I don't even really care for at all, let alone be willing to spend a grand on one.
Each to their own.

The bike had a welded seam on the bottom bracket, as well as an off centered serial number. My friend says that indicates that it's not actually a PX-10. Is this true?

Must be watching this thread.

I've walked away from every bike thats had the price raised after I've inquired. To me thats a very insulting tactic.

I have never heard that detail mentioned as something that is used to determine the authenticity of a PX10. It did send me down to the garage to examine a portion of my PX10 collection. One of four, my 1974 PX10LE, had what appears to be a raised ridge across the BB. Serial no. plate is gone. The other three had a smooth BB. My 1974 is definitely a PX10.

I can gaurantee, with 100% certainty, that following pic is from a 1972 PX10 as delivered. Note there is no riveted serial number plate and the hand stamped number:

"Now that I've read some things...I'm raising the price!"
"Good...in that case, I hope you've fixed that buggered derailer!"
"No, I have not."
"In that case, bugger off!"

I see the tell-tale inoxydable decal on the seat tube. That tell me it's model starts with a P and ends with a 10.

'X' or 'inoxydable' tubes were used in 8, 10, 50 and 60 series bikes. The 'inoxdable' label is one of many features to look for.

No, you're right. Might be worth a bit more, it's a decent deal even at the adjusted price, assuming the frame is dent and crack free.

To calirfy...Paramount track bikes are bringing big bucks.....

To further clarify, just about any vintage or semi-vintage track bike is bringing big bucks now. A grand for a chrome Paramount doesn't strike me as outrageous either just now; except in the sense I simply can't afford it. That last fact does strike me as an outrage.

+1 to the quoted part. I like 'em too, but the market has swung upwards in price something fierce lately, and gas-pipe models have gotten quite pricey, though I'm sure most of us would not spend $400 or even $100 on a UO8. But then, we already have our bikes, for the most part...

I did a little checking/research and with a little help from retyred (John B.) I think we have it figured out.

PX-10's with a seamed BB DO NOT have the fancy Nervex lugged BB shell. It seems that the non-fancy Nervex shells are to thick to have had the serial number plate revited on so they simply hand stamped a number.

Not all PX10's with fancy Nervex head lugs have a fancy Nervex BB shell. The blue BB picture in this post is from a bike with fancy Nervex head lugs but it does NOT have a fancy Nevex shell.
