Has anyone used the map my ride application for the new Iphone? If so where do you keep the phone so that it will continually pick up a GPS signal? I am thinking of getting an armband case for the phone just so I will be "exposed" to get the signal and track my ride.

Well the GPS on the phone is based on connection (wi-fi, edge or 3g) then it'll tell the satelites where you are located. I usually keep mine in my jersey pockets or in your seat bag and it should work fine, you need to "expose" your phone by buying an armband or anything. I've also seen handle bar bike mounts for iphone/ipod touch but seems kinda sketchy to me especially if you take a nasty fall.

The phone uses 2 gps methods: A-GPS - where you are located based on Cell Tower positioning and the Satellite GPS (which is way better). I load up trailguru & throw mine in my back pocket and roll out. Works like a champ. Happy camper =)

Thanks for the replies, the reason I asked, is I tried it the other night and got the green light, started the application and put it in my bag under my seat. When I got home I had been gone for 30ish minutes, but only traveled a 1/4 of a mile, now I am not fast by any stretch of the definition, nor am i a math genius, but averaging 15 mph for 30 minutes, I am pretty sure I would have traveled further than 1/4 mile. That is why i was wondering if the phone had to be out in the open for it to track my ride.

Huh. I'll have to test that out, but just throw it in a plastic bag and into your back pouch. You'll be fine.
Have you tried TrailGuru?

Nope, haven't tried Trailguru, but i just downloaded it, so if it ever quits raining, I will give it a try.
Thanks.

*LAFFS* Yeah, I don't think getting the iPhone wet will help your 'GPS' issues =)

FYI, this mount looks like a good one for the iPhone: http://www.ram-mount.com/mount/bike_mount.htm
I bought one for my Garmin, though I haven't mounted it yet.

I did the same thing, I bought the Dare thinking it was close enough to the Iphone, but ended up taking it back within the first 30 days and got the Iphone. I have been and continue to be a Verizon customer for about 6 years, and never a big fan of ATT but I bit the bullet just for the Iphone, and so far have been really happy that I did.

You could always swap to T-Mobile's G1 phone =)

For those that use an iPhone, as a replacement for the Garmin, how long did the battery last? I currently use Garmin Edge 305 to keep track of my routes, but wonder about using an iPhone for that purpose, and how long the battery would last.
^^^^ it would NOT last half as long as the Edge that is for sure. in my opinion the iPhone is not a sufficient cyclocomputer at all. stick with the Edge. later.
