"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - McQuaid says retesting samples for CERA would not 'serve the purpose'

It's funny he talks about possible degradation of samples from the Giro 4-5 months ago, yet we're talking about Armstrong's Tour samples from 1999.

The sport is already in the toilet, might as well flush.

Meant to be a bit tongue in cheek. Were they to go back and retest all the races this year and last that still have samples available, the fallout would likely be severe. McQuaid doesn't want to risk any more lost sponsors, and I can't blame him.

Formulas for half-life exist. He's talking out of his as$.

Sounds like McQuaid finally is realizing that all the doping publicity is bad for business. His buddies at the IOC threatening to kick him out of the Olympics probably didn't help, either.

Somehow we need to align our testing with track & field. That sport is just as dirty as cycling. They just don't compete as often. Percentage-wise I believe our + rate is 3-4% just like track and NFL.

if you honestly think that cycling dopes on the same level as the NFL, then you are seriously deluded.

This is hilarious:

"The French anti-doping agency is now willing to retest samples from the 2007 Tour and this year's Giro d'Italia and Spanish Vuelta.

But International Cycling Union president Pat McQuaid is against the idea.

"From the UCI's point of view, we prefer to look forward rather than look backward," McQuaid said in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday. "To randomly say 'OK, let's take all the samples from 2007 from the Tour de France and put them all through testing processes' ... it's futile, it's expensive and it's not going to serve the purpose in the anti-doping fight of today."

The UCI carried out all of the testing at the 2007 Tour, but a rift with Tour organizer ASO meant the French anti-doping agency took sole charge of testing at this year's Tour -- with a marked increase in blood testing.

McQuaid believes retesting samples from other races, including the Giro and the Vuelta, would lead to chaos.

"If we're going to start rejigging the podium of every major international race over the past two or three years, by finding new tests for new products, and going back to the organizer and saying 'you've got to rejig your podium' ... it makes a complete mockery of sport," he said. "You need very good information in order to do that in the first place."

McQuaid, speaking before a ceremony in Paris to honor 2008 Pro Tour winner Alejandro Valverde, questioned whether it would even be possible to retest old samples.

"I couldn't give you an answer as to where the 2007 samples are, nor whether they are adequate for the testing," McQuaid said. "The Giro is already over four or five months [ago]. I don't know whether the samples are still [valid], whether they've degraded to an extent ...

"It's very difficult to detect CERA in urine samples. I don't know about the blood samples, what the situation is there. As I say, I prefer that we move forward, rather than move backward.""

McQuaid went on to say "Cycling is a sport of great Champions, and as long as those Champions are not named Lance, we must respect the dignity of their sacrifice."

every union president in the world is against the truth, i mean drug testing. union presidents are defense attorneys. they dont care about whats right they only care about their clients and making sure they accept no responsibility for their illegal actions.
unions ruin business and they ruin sports. the UCI president is fully willing to allow the sport to be decimated by doping as long as he can prevent his doping riders from being caught.

If you look at it position by position I absolutely do. Linemen, linebackers most likely but they make up less than half of a 53-man roster. QBs, receivers, DBs, kickers...most of those guys wouldn't even lift weights if they weren't forced to by contract. I think it's between 30-40% and I think Pro Tour cycling is about the same, if not higher.

Yeah, Terrell Owens looks like he does because he eats a salad at lunch every day. Same with Troy Palomalu. And Chad Johnson, he never touches the things. No, none of those guys lifted weights before they got to the NFL. Of course not.

Are you f***ing kidding me?

People in my high school were roiding for football. Football just pushes it under the fence.

Some of you dummies haven't been paying any attention. McQuaid and the rest of the UCI loves Lance. They do not share the opinions of the French governing body nor of the TdF organizers. They themselves, you may recall (it was a whole 3 months ago, so you may not) have been at war with ASO for the last four years.

Let me phrase this more clearly for you:

McQuaid and UCI - pro-Lance.
ASO and AFLD - anti-Lance.

With that in mind, you should realize that cute editorials like this:

McQuaid went on to say "Cycling is a sport of great Champions, and as long as those Champions are not named Lance, we must respect the dignity of their sacrifice."

Look very, very stupid.

^ - Okay, I'll give you that one. I had a brain cramp; my eyes read McQuaid, but my head heard Pound.

Micheal Vick pre dogfighting fed prison was jacked pretty good. Most QB's are not lifters types though.

I *might* give you the kickers. There's no way DB's aren't on something. 200 lb people don't run 4.3 second 40's naturally.

The only kicker I knew in high school lifted plenty, just in a different way than a lineman would.

I'm pretty sure nearly everyone in any sport lifts weights. Even soccer.

The benefits are too big to be ignored.

Usain Bolt weighs ~200. Most sprinters are jacked.

Exactly. Ben Johnson looked like a prototypical WR and DB during his heydey.

I betcha T.O. does more than just lift weights in his driveway to get the physique/speed he has.
