Mountain Biking - Want to Ride in Sand and water 100% of the time

hi, i am looking for a surly pugsley. where is the most cost efficient way to get one?

what should i do if i plan on riding it exclusively on the sand 5 miles a day and 50 mile tours on the sand on the weekends? I dont think any bike will take that kind of abuse. can i accomplish this goal with a normal mountain or cyclocross bike? am 5'9 with a 31 inch inseam, will the 18" fit me?

i don't have sand riding experiance (other than the sand on the roads) but i would expect you to have certain parts wear out pretty fast, one thing i can say is that i would deff get somthin with disc brakes so you don't wear out ur rims sand will prolly get on the rim and get stuck in the brake pads, then scour the rims/make them wear out super fast, its only a matter of time before this becomes a problem, but with discs the brake material is much harder, the rotor is harder than the alloy rim, and the rotors are much cheaper to replace

You are going to want to clean your chain after every ride too. Make sure you build with sealed bearing every where.

You could easily accomplish this task by whoring yourself out to 1,000 fat chicks for $1. Or one really fat chick for $1,000.

I've seen pugsleys for around $1200 on ebay, but I assume at this time of year they will get bid up toward or past $1500 by budding snow bikers.

If you're set on <$1k, you pretty much have to luck into a used one. New frame + 2 large marge wheels + 2 endomorphs + 100mm BB brings you past $1k already even if you already have another bike to strip for remaining parts.

I ride on the beach on vacation... the hubs aren't too bad after returning never see any polluted grease in them.. the chain and headset are the issue you will have to address after every ride,, i'd do somehtign to seal the headset better...

when I decided to ride into the ocean my disc brake pads decided to wear away.

I must say, that Surly Pugsley looks absolutely badass.

He He, Yeah, It would only take 40 hp or so to turn that tire in sand, the way it was designed to turn!

that might work, actually, does the paddle tire fit on a 24 inch wheel?

I hope you are not being serious. It was just a joke. Paddles are meant to be spun so they can dig. I doubt you can spin a paddle fast enough to get any sort of digging effect.

I want my bike to fly. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure any LBS can order you a frame. They all have QBP catalogues hanging around. A complete bike is probably the cheapest way to go as the frame/wheels/tires + parts are probably pretty expensive individually even if you eBay everything. Run a really really low pressure and you could probably ride over anything. Seriously though, if you ride 50 miles it will take you a LONG ASS time on a Pugsley.

Cheapter alternative? Find a cheap hardtail with the largest tire clearance you can find and put some 2.7 downhill tires on it. Figure out how to rig a singlespeed w/ coaster brake and it'll probably last longer.

thats very good advice, however, wont the 2.7 inch tires be too small for beach sand? I tried my 2 inch mtb tires and they dont work too well. The pug's 3.7 inch are like 4 inchers i think one you run em with low pressure. It sure would be a hell a of lot cheaper to not buy a pug and buy a bike with 2.7 inchers though.
