General Cycling Discussion - Pics of "beaters"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi everyone. I was wondering if we could all post pictures of our beater bikes. Just curious where mine falls on the "niceness" scale.
Here's mine:

I'm such a dufus, I'm looking at your picture thinking how great it would be to live near the coast.....duh.

Hehehe. That pic does make toledo look nice though.
Schwinnbikelove, what do you think of riding in Toledo? I am originally from there, in Columbus for college now, but I still come back occasionally. I started riding shortly after I left. I never saw to many serious bikers there. Anywhere in particular you like to ride?
I don't really have a beater yet, so I can't post a pic. I am trying to gather parts for a fixed road bike and maybe a SS mountain bike though. Those will be the beaters.

It is actually North Coast Harbor, in Cleveland. The William G. Mather museum in the back, The Rock hall is on the right . It's about a ten minute walk from where I work. Perhaps I should look at the things i have more often.
cleveland cyclists arise!
I know it's off topic, but Red Light Go is playing at the film fest saturday M20, with an alley cat after and the March 20 occupation protest, public sq.
my beater is a 70's raleigh record SS: orange and white, dude.
such a beater: no photo...

This beater is kept at my place of business for running errands. Primered Bianchi Pista fixed gear & very old Brooks saddle.
This is a most beautiful beater. I'm down with the primer!

Is that the chain you use to lock this bike?

Is that the chain you use to lock this bike?
I was just thinking, I wonder how many hundreds of local teens have tried to unhook it with just their hands and failed. Then, if someone got smart and used a lever, who would have to put it back on the next day. :D
Sorry, I'm working on the whole acting my age thing.

ehenz, that is pretty dufusitic!! He he. It's amazing how we overlook what we have right in our own backyard.
Funny about the chain, guys...
You guys have some nice beaters... I'd be proud to own any of them. Mine's actually nice for what it is, I always keep it spotless (I'm a neat-freak), the only crap on it is the seat, which won't get stolen, and is still intact and comfortable.
I have pics of Toledo's coastline, but the files are too big to put on as an attachment (high quality setting on camera...)
What do I think about cycling in Toledo? I think I'm the only one, discounting the ghetto hoods with the aluminum foil on their cruiser's spokes, then there are the poor people, the one woman who lives on her bike and talks to herself, then me. It makes me sad.......

The girls got no BRAKES! (hope you wear a helmet)
One up on you safe guy sissy ss'ers. :D
I feel overburdened with my brakes- maybe just a rear?
I downhill and offroad-so the non-brake option is a bit risky.-be one hell of a run though!
I hate deraillers too, ( dirty secret, I have a rear one ;) )

I've posted this gem before. 1989? China made Schwinn Worldsport. And sporty she is. This one does it all: groceries, beer, bar hopping, commuting to work, and carrying whatever.

 An artist and cyclist?
The proposal was before I found out about your coaster brakes.
But what the hell, I'm into kinky bike things. ;)
Perhaps a photo of you riding the spyder?
Girls, bikes, stripped down frames, damn it's getting warm in here.
Think I'll go play with my umm- brakes! :p

Aw man, you're horrible!!! :p Alas, it's meant to be. I had previously done this with a pic of one of my other bikes, however, your version is much higher quality...What a coinkydink (it's been YEARS) since I've used that word.
P.S. I don't know if you can tell, but the basket has hearts on it!

heres the old huffy with an enormous tire on the back. I locked down the front derailleur on the middle chinring; the chain hit the tire on the granny gear, plus I had a v-brake lever I wanted to use with a cheap-ass "power tools" v-brake on the front.
The whole bike kinda sucks, and it has reached about a constant level of suck after beong thown off three to four foot drops (with me on it). Now I just sort of putt around on it. I dont think I'd want to ride it to work...
If that's your beater, what does your good bike look like...?
what do you mean? it will be my beater and only bike when i buy it. i don't plan on buying a car anytime soon. it will be my only transport while i'm a student... and i want a phd in physics... so... yeah.. that's a while. that biek should be good enough. i've though of buying a walmart schwin... but i keep hearing they fall apart. i just made a thread asking about why people say they fall apart.

LOL see the post with the colnago/ferrari bike :p

This is now my beater. In the 80's is was my prize mtb, then demoted to my road bike until yesterday, and now it is my beater.

Here's my beater. It used to be my nice bike, but time has been unkind to it, and now it gets passed over for the soma doublecross when it comes to nice rides.
It's an early nineties kona explosif frame, with the random scraping the shop bins parts package. I love the way it rides, and it's ugly enough that i can lock it up pretty much anywhere.

Yes that is ugly. Was that done on purpose to deter theft, or did it just kinda happen?

I like Fixer's "beater."
Mine's a '93 Bridgestone RB-T with Moustache h-bars. Heavy, but has a triple and can handle gravel roads and neglect.
Well, here's my commuter. I guess you could call it a beater. $24.95 from the local thrift store. Use it to commute almost daily. :)

Well, it started life as a black frame with an atrocious 80's "splatter" job in pink and blue. I figured it shouldn't be that kind of ugly, so I gave it a sorta greenish/bluish paint job. As the years dragged on, I took to touching up chips with a spray from whatever can of paint was available. It's also got the detritus of 13 years worth of cheap paper-based stickers on it.
So, yes to both, I guess.

Ok guys, here is my beater number two. This equals three bikes that I have now (after I sell my mountain bike), so I've downsized considerably. It's my 1965 Schwinn Varsity, 39x14, which is even harder when your bike weighs 30-40 pounds??? he he he

most of you folks have beaters that are so nice-looking compared to mine. my beater has been through city road salt for two winters and was old before that. everything that could collect rust has collected rust. but if i'm lucky i'll never ride the thing again after tomorrow night, which is when i hope to get my good bike fixed. (it one looks like a beater too, but it's pretty much rust-free and better in bunch of other ways.)

It may be hideous, but it rides like a dream. Isn't that what a beater should be, ideally?
