Has anybody done RAGBRAI on a fixed gear? I am debating giving it a try.

Iowa the last week of July has got to be really hot!

Get yourself a flip flop fixed/fixed hub, if you don't already have one, and if your frame can accommodate a 4-5 tooth difference on the rear hub, you should be fine. I have ridden across various parts of the country many times and that is enough of a difference to handle any variance in terrain. I road the Rocky Mountains a couple of years ago and that is what I used. If you are really fit then the need for such a 4-5 gear spread is not as great, especially considering the RAGBRAI terrain. 2-3 gear difference would be fine.
