Advocacy & Safety - Abot "bikesdirect.com

I am looking to buy a road bike for my fitness and commuting needs and noticed a web site by the name of bikesdirect.com. It looks like a good place to buy if you are cheep like me but has anyone have any idea about this site both good and bad.

Do a search in the Road Forum, there are tons of posts there. Do the search first or they'll tear you a new one.

I bought a very nice bike at a very good price from them, for my daughters first road bike.

If not for finding an even sweeter entry road bike online @ Target, I'd have ordered one from BD. As it is, they're def. the cheapest place for singlespeeds.

They're fine for entry-level bikes. Don't be oversold on the breathless descriptions of the bikes, but the deals are good and their service is good. And DO NOT bring it up on the Road Forum.

I have two experiences with BD. Both of them were unsatisfactory. First, my coworker bought a bike from them and it was unrideable as shipped. One of the disk brakes was bent, the wheels were anything but true and the paint was scratched. I ordered a bike and my order was cancelled with the only notice coming from paypal. When I inquired, I received a few rude email responses from BD. I am working on a more comprehensive post describing my experience. In short, they will more than likely never get a dime from me.

I've purchased two bicycles from BD, and both had some sort of mechnical issue due to shipping or factory assembly. I'll still buy from BD regardless, since both incidents were fairly easy to fix.
I don't recommend BD for someone who has little or no bicycle mechanical experience, since having to pay an LBS to assemble, tune, and fix a BD bike's every little quirk is defeating the purpose of saving money by buying from BD in the first place. My two BD bikes now have a couple of thousand miles each, and I have my eye on another BD bike for a replacement for my current winter commuter.

Fine deals if fully understood in all details and if one is willing to completely disassemble and reassemble. Possibly not ideal for those expecting perfection.

To put in context, I tend to disassemble and reassemble bikes from real shops, too. I find the same kinds of minor and not so minor mistakes and misadjustments. Not to the same level.
