I've been riding all winter long with 3 layers. Now that the mornings are getting warmer and lighter, I need to pack away the layers and shell. What do you wear in the brisk mornings? Do you put on a base layer underneath a shell? Do you always wear a shell? Or, does a jersey alone work? Long sleeve, short sleeve? What about shorts, tights? Does it act as a wind resistant shell? Need some answers. A lot of questions, I know. Thanks for the tips to come.

Two choices: shell jacket over a short-sleeve jersey, or arm warmers w/ the short-sleeve jersey. In both cases, I can remove the extra layer (either the jacket or arm warmers) when climbing or if it gets sunny/warmer. I can also "add back" if it stays cool on faster descents.

BTW, I always wear a base layer (sleeveless DeFeet or Voler) under my jersey, partly because it keeps me warmer, and because I'm wearing a HRM band, and that way I NEVER get flaky HRM readings if I have a layer between the jersey and the band (others have reported static electricity from the jersey "flapping" against the band).

I usually wear knickers if it's under 60 degrees, shorts when it's over 60 degrees.
