Mountain Biking - Completely Cheeto'd My BB....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
....last night.
It was a Phil Wood SS BB. By the time I noticed there was play in there I had bearings rolling onto the trail.
I had to hoof it quite a ways back to the car. By the time I was done all I had was the BB shell and the spindle holding the cranks together rattling around.
It was like the thing just spontaneously combusted. No seals left, no bearings, no anything.
No warning either. Not a creak or anything. I am still in mild shock and a bit perplexed.
I figured the Phil Wood would last me at least 2 years, but I guess heavy singlespeed use will end up cheeto ing anything.

C Law sucks.
^ I think i am putting out too many watts for Phil to handle
With the inception of the external BB...I truly don't understand why anyone would want anything else. Sealed cartridge bearings. Wide bearing placement. Light. Strong.
Is Phil slightly lighter or something?
Buy a decent ext BB singlspeed crankset and be done with it. Phil makes ext BB's:

My Raceface Diabolus crankset comes with Phil's grease.
Crankset and BB used to be the first thing I'd replace when I bought a bike. Since 2005, I've only had 2 cranksets and that's not because I wore 1 out. I just decided to bump up to the Hone from LX.
Something to consider:thumb:
BTW...what crankset are you running?
White Industries Eno Cranks
I have a couple of XT 760 cranksets laying around, I'll probably end up converting one to SS use. Coupled with King or Phil external BB's that setup should be pretty bomber
re-phil wood - They are pretty much thought to be indestructable, overbuilt, not light.

Now you're talking. Why spend $130 King or Phil? Just spend $35-$40 on a Diabolus and be done with it. They're tough enough to take a beating and quite smooth. Only drawback is that they're gold. You could buy 3 of them for the same price though.
^King for Bling, why else?
'Nuff said. I was gonna go with a King headset for this new build, but I figured I could spend $115-$130 on a King...$150 on a King Steelset, or just spend $48 on the Tank Hit and don't look back.
I am just joking really, I could care less about looks, I just want stuff to last a loooooong time.

Well, my friend here in T-Town bought a used Raceface evolve X-Type crankset. The BB was in bad shape. I dunno if he got it full'o water or what, but my Shimano ext. BB's have been great. I actually switched him out and he's running the Shimano. I'm expecting this Diabolus to be even better though.
