I'm here to ask, why are some rear deraillers more expensive than others, other than the brand names. Is there anything more the deraillers have. Adjustability, loss of weight, durability? Anything else? I mean, I'm getting an Altus soon but why are LX's so expensive? Lightweight? Is there more to that?

EDIT: I might get an Altus, after reading the generally bad reviews about slow shifting, hell from what I saw from their site makes me think my shimano SIS is good...Anyone reccomend a budget, but better than Altus derailler, as mine is still aint that great compared to real bikes.

The more expensive derailleurs generally speaking have:

Lighter parts made of more exotic material
Higher precision or more durable linkages/bearings
More servicable (?)
Faster shifting
More intricate design to ensure more positive shifts
Hype and street-cred


The LX is more expensive because it uses more durable parts. It will generally last longer than an Altus derailleur.

Whew, if you think an LX is expensive, you haven't priced any XTR's have you?

If I were upgrading my derailleur and with a limited budget, I'd stick with a Deore level. The difference between Deore and LX in negligible. I would however move up to XT if you could afford it. XTR is not necessary!
