Bicycle Mechanics - Crank removal

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I need to remove my cranks from a Shimano square taper BB...i know you need a puller, but thats not in the budget. Is it possible to remove them with standard tools? Not concerned about damaging the cranks, im pitching them anyway(they're crap).

Maybe your local LBS would let you "borrow" one for the whole two minutes it would take.
Nashbar's Crank Extractor is $9.95 and works great. It doesn't take much room in the budget to get the right tool. Then, if you have a problem with the new cranks, you'll be able to get them back off.

Don't try hacking it; you're likely to do as much damage to the BB as to the arms. Maybe you could get associated with these guys (http://ohiocitycycles.org/aboutUs.asp), and for a little elbow grease, get access to tools.

Not planning on hacking anything...i think i will take it to the race car shop on campus and use a little gear puller to get em off. Not concererned with damaging the old cranks like i said, but i fear that a lot of hammering will injure my BB.

Buy an el cheapo gear puller at your local auto parts store. It will gouge your cranks but should do the job.

There's a seller on eBay called TheHonestWrench, selling a Park crank puller. Current high bid is $5.50, with another $5.50 shipping.

Just curious, but what are you planning to do once you get the old crank off? The crankset is what determines what bottom bracket spindle length that you need. Your new crank may be different than the one you're taking off.

It won't do you any good this time, but I've got two (Parks) and I'd be glad to sell you (or anybody) one for a few bucks. If you're interested send me a PM. Shipping will probably be another ~$3.50.
