Okay, on and off over the past *two* years or so I have been trying to search for something in particular from time to time, and I can't find a darn thing on it.

There was a song written in the late 80s or early 90s called "Orono." It is a parody of "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys. The song is about all of the suburbs of the Twin Cities metro area here in MN. The group that did the parody is called either Blackstreet or 5th Street, or [something]-street.

Anyway, I am looking for lyrics, a recording, or *anything* about this song. I have a really terrible recording that is hardly audible on a cassette tape that is breaking from when it was a number one hit on WLOL (not the current WLOL) here in the cities, but I want something I can show some friends at work who think I have been making this thing up for a few years.

I tried Google and other search engines I could find. I tried "ask" websites, all to not a single search result.

Are there any super searching experts here that could give it a shot?

Was it a popular song, or was it done by some local band that faded away?

If it's the latter, then it may very well not be on the Internet, though someone, someone might have it.

That is pretty much my point. I am not sure how far out in popularity the song reached, and I don't know if the group was local or not.

It can't be common because I personally can't find anything, but someone somewhere must have something about this.

Hence the challenge. :)

Out of curiousity, you originally from the area, only people I remember referring to it as "the cities" were Iron Rangers, etc.

Yep, 99.5, when it was WLOL. In fact, when 99.5 changed to MPR, that was my introduction to classical music and I have since made a career out of it and haven't really listened to anything else since!

I have always lived within or touching the city limits of Minneapolis. I thought that everyone I know has always called "the cities" by that name, even those who have always lived here. However, I do have tons of relatives on the range, so maybe I picked it up from them as a youngun and didn't realize that is where I got it from.

The fact that you remember the song is good enough for me!!!

"Orono"? You sure you're looking in the right place? Orono is also a college town way up Maine.

Nah, I always heard people either say Mpls OR St. Paul. Even if they were from the 'burbs. One of the old REV 105 DJs, Kyle Smith is here in the 'Burgh now on 91.3FM WYEP. Good stuff. Miss those good stations.

Yes, Orono is a college town in Maine. It's also a suburb of Mpls.

Just like Oxford is a college town in Ohio, and a town in WI, IL, and IN, too.
