way back when, 25yrs ago, I had a handlebar bag that was a tubular bag about 5" in diameter held in place by four(IIRC) velcro straps between brake hoods and bar ends. Anyone see something like that made now? It worked fine for holding a few items without extending beyond the space between the brake hoods and drops.

that's the dimension of the bag with a velcro strap around the brake hoods and another strap around the drops, I don't recall if there was a strap around the tops of the bars as I remember being able to have room for my fingers.

The bag in the link I gave you has leather straps around the tops of the handlebars. It has brass rings on the ends so you can run a cord between the bag and the brake lever hoods or the drops. It leaves room for your fingers around the tops of the bars. It's essentially a remake of the bag you had way back when, in canvas and leather and brass. I've got one that I keep on a beater bike with mustache bars, it's great for a few small items like you said.

It's light, simple, and inexpensive but not waterproof, I keep a zip lock inside. I wish it had velcro for quicker mounting/removal.

After contemplating "pink kitty" I went with the plain black.

I had one of them back in the 70s. Made by Cannondale, called the "Toot". They still make a bag called the toot but it straps to the bars, ... not suspended between the brake hoods like the old one. Don't recall any velcro...mine had elasticized straps that pulled taught and wrapped around the hoods, finishing with a snap fastener. Wonder what happened to mine?

You could always stretch some webbing material between the hoods and strap a bag to that...keeping the entire bar top free of obstructions..
