Utility Cycling - My new new, yet very old bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Yes, I know, I just made one, but it was a compleat fail, so, I came up with this bike, it looks really nice in my eyes, so pretty lol, but, it aint done yet, almost, but not quite, I ran into a mountain of problems building this, but since I had two it was easy to fix, the chain was a issu, anyway pics will come in a hour or so. be amazed at what you find in the garbage!

Waiting for pix! Tell us about the problems becouse I am also thinking about a vintage longtail.
Also I am thinking of a longtail with a 20" rear wheel so I can keep the animal in a box above the wheel instead of on one side. Also a bike like that would be shorter and for my use that would be ok.
Well, the sizes of things on old bikes is a issu, like the crank, a 3 speed has a crank with one set of sprokets, but the teeth gap isn't the same as the gap on the rear casset, luckly I had two mixte, I had to use the cotter pin crank to make it work, this is a good thing to think about before you start, I didn't lol. but I had all the parts, another thing is, two mixte are hard to fuse to eachother without welder, rim sizes where another problem, but i've got mountains, anyway this mint bike is what i've created, not only is it old but I added Campy gear system, Here she be, the shutter didn't open on first pic lol, last pic is a random pile, I cleaned a shed today.......

That's a cool build, but is it flexy?
Abit of flex but the flex can be removed by some alterations, I don't mind it though, with my saddle bags the bike looks like it's built to be that long, they cover the whole back. lol

Great build! You should show it off in the mixte tread in the vintage forum. Maybe they`d think you are a bad boy for doing this to a mixte:D

Did some reading earlyer today at Velo Orange, writing about mixtes. I like them alot, great bikes!

I like the vintage chain / chainwheels, they are stronger than alot of the lighter skinny modern stuff. Good for longtails.
Hope the info helped, I did post there to show them. lol, I gave it the 40k test today, it passed with flying colors, I suggest this build,
Here it is as it stands now, it's gonna get a very old bell, new breaks, and lots of loving lol I'm very proud of this one, it even carried it's first load last night, not much just 8 cases of diet pepsi , only problem is I have to modify the chain guard slightly. heres pics.

breaks= What happens to the bike if you carry too much diet pepsi.
brakes= What stops the bike so you don't spill your diet pepsi.
8 cases! How about water? Just because its "diet" does not mean it is good for you.....
I know it aint good for me, I buy that much so I don't have to go for a long time, I use them as special treats with the odd dinner. lol If I drink that to much biking would be hard, and I love biking

Did you see that somebody commented on your bike in the mixte tread in the Vintage section? Think they called it a stretched mixte and that it was cool.
Here the first snow is comming today, so I need to put studded tyres on a lot of bikes. First winter on a longtail.

Cool, yeah it snowed here, it never snows here before halloween, not only did it snow, but it was a huge snowstorm, it blew the power in several areas to, it was very unsuspecting, it was unsuspecting for my poor new longtail to, i'll take a pic and show why. lol
Tada! can you find my bike in the picture? lol the sad part is the best I could do is clean these bikes off but they have to stay there, everything is ice so I can't get the tarps and stuff out, why did this happen though? to many people drive cars, RIDE A BIKE! save the planet, honistly though, did you know alot of people use cars to go to work and stuff when it's right around the corner? PICS!!

That is strange, exactely the same happend here. I had two longtails out there in the snow. Now most of the bikes is under a roof (carport). That means the car has to stay out in the snow. That is only fair :D
thats right, cars should stay out there and freeze their mufflers off. lol and now the snows almost gone, my longtail looks pretty neat when white wall tires, the front is to fat and rubs forks, they will need to be replaced or altered.

Maybe put the original wheel & tyre? But then you loose the whitewalls. Soon the rearwheel is going to be cowered by bag & luggage, so looks is not important.
I like the red folder in the background. Are you going to make it ridable?
It actualy is rideable, just bad looking, it's a restore project, though it wont look like the origanal but it will be nice, when I first got it the seat was so rotted it was all bones lol it's an old folder, it wouldn't even split, It's a 3speed but the rear rims rusted and will never look the same again, might respoke,

I like the stretched mixte idea... the low step over is a great idea for every longbike.

I like old folders. I tend to repace wheels or rebuild wheels if they are bad looing or heavy. Alu is great Is it cttered?

I agree, and I suspect they are the strongest steptrough frames. That is why I built this one for my son.
