I've got to change the cable on a cheapy 7 speed Sunrun twistgrip and can't figure out how you do it? Does it pull apart like an old Gripshift unit? Doesn't seem to want too and I'm nervous Im gonna brake it!

sunrace is cheap and if the shifter casing has no screws or allen bolts to gain access inside, i wouldn't risk it. but then again, if the shifter cable NEEDS to be replaced, if the case is not resealable or breaks, you woulda needed a new shifter anyways.

your LBS may be willing to see if it is servicable for a replacement cable and it SHOULD be, but i doubt it. sorry i have no personal exp for you, but i generally disdain gripshift type shifters and don't use them much.

If it was my bike I think that I'd replae both shifters with SRAM MRX shifters. They don't cost very much more than replacement cables and they'll come with new cables already installed.

Lol, I am my local local LBS! I service and resell cheap bikes to students and commuters. I know I can replace the shifters but if I could I'd like to keep these, although they are cheap and awfull! So, anybody know how to change the cable? Before I rip the damn things off the bike:crash:

you should be able to line up the 7 to the mark and pull and if all goes well it will come apart, if not yes replace the shifter they are cheap. to put back together line up 7 to the line and push. it will snap together.

Done it! It sure feels like its gonna break, but it came apart. I think theres a collar against the twistgrip that needs to be pulled out first, but it comes away with the main body if you pull hard, and the outer body is connected to the inner body with a spring. Anyways it works well with a new cable fitted, even though its cheap and nasty!
