A buddy of mine just gave me this link... apparently John Kerry likes to ride... check out the article about 1/2 way down or so... talks about bringing a "high end racing bike" off a plane... this guy just scored a few more points with me :-)

I've read where he has a custom-built Serotta.

Before anyone starts posting hurrahs or raspberries maybe this thread should move to Politics and Religion.

FWIW, I recall Lance Armstrong once gave President Bush a Trek 5500.

Kerry rides a fixed gear also. ...... with a FLIP-FLOP rear hub which he frequently takes advantage of!

So what? He still won't get my vote! Besides it's his wife that makes all the big bucks so she buys him whatever he wants.

When he wins, we may finally get some attention paid to the issues cyclists deal with. Considering the price of gas; it's about time.

I attended a fri evening event with Ben Serotta at RBM.
he mentioned that Kerry is getting his second Serotta,
he ordered an Ottrott, and I believe he already has
a legend Ti. He actually lives pretty close to the Serotta
workshop (ny/mass border?).
FYI Jimmy Carter rides a Rivendell, now thats a class act!

Please leave the Politics out of this discussion, ok?
This is not the place for it.

Nothing is neutral. Everything is political, especially the simple act of riding a bicycle.

Leave the political stuff out of it. Nobody cares what you think of him as a politician or about his wife. It was a "look a celebrity who can influence people rides a bike" post nothing more. It's none of our business who you intend to vote for especially considering this isn't the Politics forum

I can't imagine a political figure such as one running for President would find it safe to ride a bike...Too many enemies..If Kerry is an avid cyclist and becomes president, his cycling will probably be limited to a trainer.
At least they have a big movie screen in the White House.. Would be a good set up for a trainer and videos of the best stages of the Tour De France.

Or...

The Secret Sevice sanitises a mobile 5 mile radius free-fire missile zone surrounding him and designated with a Presidential TFR complete with orders to shoot first and ask questions later. This is current SOP for airspace at least.

Either that or he's gonna be riding a full-fairing so he can be enclosed in armour and bullet-proof windshields.

In conversation with one of the guys at SRAM, he mentioned that Kerry owns 7 bikes. Dunno if it's true but he's certainly got some money.

What in the world do you do when you call areas of the country redneck? Or your comments about Chinese with guns are out to shoot cyclist? Or tell someone how they should write on the forum? So are you the cop of the forum? We all comment on whatever we want, and however we want, and guess what? We don't care what you think!!!!!!!!!

Missiles? No, Presidents have a retreat near DC they can go to. He can ride there. But being so athletic, it's certain he will like the caged feeling less than most of the them....and none of them like it.

A political figure will net you some political responses! I think he is more of a headline grabber than a cyclist, but I do see how someone who is high profile would have a hard time putting in very much quality time on a bike.

Now how about slaping the poster just before mine on the wrist also! ;)

Some people think Bush is a cyclist because Lance Armstrong gave him a Trek after his Tour De France last year. Never heard mentioned Bush ever being on a bike..Runner, yes.
I suspect Armstrong's hat he is wearing is a member of The Amercian Bicycle League? Wonder if the Administration supported alternative transportation funding ( ie. Bike trails) in the National 'Istea' federal transportation bill.
Seem I recall bike trail funding was wiped out due to financial constraints.
and addressing the previous point..To be president and be a cyclist where would you ride that the Secret Service could protect you?

Up and Down the white house driveways?

Camp David for one, lots of road protected by the army and secret service,
good hills too (its in the Catoctin mountains).
No different than Clinton going out for a run along the mall.

Either that or he's gonna be riding a full-fairing so he can be enclosed in armour and bullet-proof windshields.

If he becomes president, he's gonna have the big bucks to be able to commision a fully-faired unibody kevlar-carbon composite bike.

you know, kevlar-carbon composite unibody construction would be a really great idea for faired recumbents, if it didn't cost a fortune.

Military bases would be a start. I wonder if they have trainers set up in his limo (by limo, I am referring to Air Force One).

Not only is Kerry a cyclist, he's also a hockey player! It was pretty cool to see him out there with Neely and Bourque a couple of months back.

I think the White House needs a velodrome and a hockey rink out there on the South Lawn! Maybe if they removed a few of the bushes, there would be room to put them in? :)

CycleZealot,
Its a Serotta, current discussion at the Serotta site is that its a
CIII, although he (kerry) just ordered an Ottrot.
Here's a closer look at the headtube.
Thanks to BBD for posting pic on serotta forum
(I lifted it from there!).

Thanks Marty...So it is not an American bike..But bet he owns more than one anyway. But not quite a Robin Williams?
One thought...How about deciding the election with a bike race between Kerry and Bush? Since many of us do not trust the new voting machines, anyway? I like that idea. Give them until November to get ready.
Kerry has the Serotta and Bush's Armstrong's Trek. Which bike would you think the better odds? Kerry a cyclist/hockey player, Bush a runner. Fair competition.?
Always said in war why not just have to heads of government just go out in a duel. Save a lot of money and lives..Same as to elections?
Guess, that would take a Constitutional amendment... Do think biking clears the mind..Good thing in a President.

That looks like JFK is turning on to the bike path along the Sacramento River at the Golden State train museum in Old Sac. A pic ran in the Bee yesterday but because it was in B/W I couldn't see his spiffy paint job.

Just about the same time, I was a few miles up the path. If I'd known that the Senator was going for a spin, I might have swung by and asked to drop in. Maybe plead for federal funding of the American River Parkway and Bike Trail. Or at least give him a hard time about not wearing a proper jersey.

Thanks Marty...So it is not an American bike...Cyclezealot,

Serotta's ARE made in the USA by Serotta in Saratoga Springs, NY. Before their move last year, their factory was located in Glens Falls, NY, about an hour away. Ben Serotta also was the builder for the Huffy bikes ridden by the 7-11 teams. I believe the first US rider to win a stage of the TdF was Davis Phinney on a Serotta. The Sierra Nevada Racing Team is also riding Serotta's this year.
