Utility Cycling - Rear basket/rack

I'm looking for something for my bike here at college. I saw a rack once that had large baskets on each side, but the baskets folded up when they aren't needed, and just lie flat on the sides of the bike. Does anyone know of where to buy one off the internet? I'm just looking for a simple metal one, for a decent price. The bike sits outside at a rack 24/7.

I have that setup on three of my bikes... The rack and baskets are seperate purchases...
Go to Amazon and do a search for Wald (makes the baskets)... They sell the ones you are talking about in pairs... One for each side of the rack of yur choice... Wald also makes some nice steel racks which are plenty strong to hold the baskets and this too is available from Amazon...

Will these two work together, or is there a better idea for a rack?

Should work great.. The baskets clamp (hardware furnished) to the rails on the side of the rack.. Love mine and use them all the time... Price has gone up on them though I see :-(

Yeah, kinda spendy. But it looks like a 10x's better setup than this walmart plastic seat-post-mount rack I have right now. Not sure what I was thinking when I bought it. I'm going to order some new stuff, thanks for the help :)

Wald sells racks too. But the folding baskets will fit on a lot of other brands of racks. I like mine on the bike they are currently on.

I was out looking at my bike, and I think I hit a snag. The struts on the rack would be easy to mount, but the front is difficult. My bike is a cruiser. There is a strut the goes across the top bar where the fender mounts, but I'm not sure if the rack would attach to that point. Here's my bike:

It should fit, however you may need to modify the bracket or get a different bracket to attach the front of the rack. You need the one that is adjustable (http://www.bikepartsusa.com/bikeparts/item/01-122109/search/Delta%2D%2DMAGA%2DREAR%2DBIKE%2DRACK%2DUNIVERSAL%2DBLACK&category=search)on the rack itself. It slides back and forth. You will also need p-clamps (http://www.wallbike.com/accessories/pclamps.html) to grab a hold of the seat stays. You can make a rack fit.

That's a very cool, but totally impractical bike. Good luck trying to mount racks on there!

Impractical, sort of. But it's one of my simpler builds, so I'll stick to it. I pull a trailer around with it sometimes. It has a bendix 2-speed kickback hub, and that frame is aluminum. I also rebuilt that fork with stronger hardware. It's a stout lightweight bike believe it or not. I don't have a wide range of tools here at school, just wrenches, sockets, screw drivers, etc. All the fun stuff is back home.

You can go to hardware store & buy a 3-4ft long piece of flat metal, about 1" wide. Cut it to a length to where one end fits under the lip of the plastic seat post rack, & other attaches to axle/dropout, for a brace. Drill holes for each end & it is a sturdy rack then.

If you are interested in buying baskets,, be SURE that you get those with a rear rack , if you don't already have one ! Some are just the baskets by themselves.

If you have trouble mounting the rack to the seat stays, you could use the seat clamp as a mounting point.

I've never seen that clamp before. That a good idea. I haven't ordered anything yet, good thing too. I'm thinking about going with the wald rack that has built on baskets. I'm not seeing the folding ones as worth it since this thing just sits outside here at school.
