Thanks Ron & John for an Epic day. I started the day feeling extreme jealousy towards the BF gang across the puddle punishing them selves at the “Low Key Hill Climb” event. Part of me was feeling left out…I really wanted to do that series but I’m just not coordinating things efficiently lately. But in two weekends I’m going to try to jump in to the fun.
BossDog:

I showed up at Pleasanton Bart station around 8:40 and Mr. and Mrs. Boss were waiting patiently for the gang to show up. By 9am only Ron and I had shown up, so we all discussed what we really wanted to do…I really wanted to do Diablo on my Taxi Bike SS even thought the legs were a little tired. I figured somewhere along the line I’d be able to dope up on some Java!

Boss man and Ron were game, so we took off after one more reconnaissance of the parking lot. It was kind of like a tour of the Livermore valley with the Boss. I actually enjoyed the relaxed pace and the combination of weather made for a perfect start to the ride. Ron and I talked about some of his friends down in the Southland and they seem like a nice bunch who I’d really like to meet and ride with sometime. I think I somewhat committed to a Triple Crown next year…! ( I should be committed!) John was as usual making us laugh our butts off. It’s always like 7th grade with that guy!
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa292/taxi777/Bossman1093.jpg

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa292/taxi777/S.jpg

We stopped in Blackhawk for some doping at “Starbucks” and enjoyed watching the Cybernetic rebuilt M.i.l.f’s with bolt on boobies and re-grafted faces rolling up in their Hubbies vanity plated Bentley’s and what-not to do whatever and completely ignore us in our fine pro looking cycling kits pumping out our studly chests like Gorilla’s in the mist…Oh boy they just don’t know what the heck they’re missing!

We did a nice easy tour through Blackhawk and waved hello to the Senators, movie stars and sports figures on the front yard golf courses…They all seemed to know who the Bossman is cause they we’re all laughing and pointing at us as we strode by in our cycling finery. In fact John pointed out one of his friends…a physician; I think he said his name was Dr. Vinnie Boom bah!
Well we approached the bottom of the Diablo climb and we convinced BossyJohn that he should really go wee wee before the climb. When he stepped behind a tree, that was our signal and Ron and I were off and running…we knew getting an early jump on the Boss was the only way we would have a chance to stay ahead!

I held back on the climb a wee bit. I didn’t know what I’d be feeling like when I got near the top, so I was hoping for just a little extra at the end.
As usual I kept running into beautiful sirens to chat up and I did stop a couple of times to shoot some picts, water and generally annoy whoever with endless chatter!

There we’re rock climbers, Rangers in training and I met a very nice woman in pink…on a pink bike with pink panniers. Her name was Allison. This was her way of training for touring…riding up and down the mountain with full packing.

I did a gel pack and got water at the junction which probably saved me. I was getting pretty tired. I also was trying the Nuun tabs for the first time. I could really taste the salt pouring out of me.
That last stretch about a mile from the junction to the top was out of control. Just before the top I started to get a little nauseous, but seemed to come out of it right at the top. I was running a 42X16, I think an 18 would have been just about right.

At the summit I reached the “Diablo Death Penalty” that last 200 ft…Holy Mother of Smokey the Bear WTF!!!!! Cathy and I just watched the video I took and it was hard to watch…I hope I can get it up on Utube for you all. I’m having a little trouble with it right now though. (Keeps stalling)

I hung out for a bit, then called Bossman and told him I’d meet up with him back down at the junction…
Time for me with stops for water and pictures plus chatting was just about 1hr 20 mins. Not to bad. I went down and some how missed Ron, He was just doing the last 200ft so he had a pretty damn good time too…Ron’s a changeling!

We got down to meet up with Bossman. He was busy hearing the “Crashing Colnago Story” for the umpteenth time…He was the unwilling captive audience. He can explain it to you sometime.

At this point the ride could have ended and it would have been fine, but there were a few encores coming.
We rode down the front of the Diablo. It was a great descent and now my longest so far on the Langster. The bike is so fast on the descent that it scares me! It’s like it’s not touching the ground. Very light and agile. The only problems is with one gear you can’t power out of the corners at 35-40 cause your topped out at around 24 Mph. It was then that the Boss stole the advantage with his “FANCY” geared bike and actually was able to pass “Pumpin Pete” whose Man chobes immediately shrunk to the size of a couple of BB’s!... : (
Damn You!

We took a tour of the W.C. and Concord and headed down to the Bossmans Hood for some Pizza…We knew we were getting close to his turf when we started seeing lot’s of Graffiti and gang signs. It was a bit creepy. It was ok though cause he was wearing his colours!

We had a tremendous lunch…X large Pepperoni, Pineapple, Sausage and mushrooms. Looking through the menu an item on the wine list caught my eye…”Cycles Gladiator” wine! I asked to look for the bottle and lo and behold it was the actual picture on the label that Red Rider has hanging in her house! How freaking awesome! Tell me that wasn’t some beautiful cosmic synchronicity!

Ok so it could have ended there…NO!

We’re riding through a parking lot and Bossmans got some zip in the ole legs from all that pizza. All of a sudden…honk! Bang, a car in front of us backs out into another car. Everyone exits angrily and looks at the damage. Behind the car that gets hit a guy jumps out of his car with a big smile…”Don’t worry I’m here, I’m here! I look at the side of the car and there is a big sign… “DENT Man” Auto body…hmmm score another for the cosmos!

We said goodbye to John the Bossman and proceeded to run into a SS dude on a Swabo..bike. the same model I had seen yesterday in Lombardi’s and almost had Cathy convinced to put it on layaway. The guys name was Dave and he was just some cool dude from Santa Cruz who moved to the East bay and rides up and down the Iron Horse trail everyday cause he loves his bike! He led us all the way back to Pleasanton…What a cool guy and what an awesome ending to a great day with Ron and John. I’m really glad I did this ride. What a lucky dude I am to have met such great people from NorCal.

See ya next week for George’s ride.

BTW anyone up for a Hamilton ride…but not too early! I just want to get that one in on the Langster before the end of the year.

The route's in my head. What - you need written directions? What kind of adventure would that be?
Did the Germans have directions when they attacked Pearl Harbor?

Just show up......

bigbossman

Ok - here's the route I have pictured in my brain. Meet in the Pleasanton BART south side parking lot around 9am-ish (I might be a few minutes late). This route should be 30-35 miles, with an additional 5-10 RT to Amici's and back. Also, if we are a small and frisky bunch, we can discuss ways to add mileage as we ebb and flow during the ride.

One possibility to turn it into a more epic ride would be to turn towards Castro Valley at the end of Palomares and ride up and over Redwood to Moraga, and loop back down to Danville Blvd and straight back to BART. That would add a ton o' mileage, but probably rule out Amici's. However, it would put us in low orbit for a stop at Primo's Pizza in DT Danville. :)

Start - Pleasanton BART, south side parking lot
Willow Road, south
W. Los Positas, right
Foothill Rd, left
continue on Foothill to Sunol
at Sunol, turn right onto 84 west
Palomares Rd, right (immediately after Railroad over-crossing)
Paloverde Rd, right
Dublin Cyn, right
Foothill Rd, right
W. Los Positas, left
Willow, Left
Finish at BART station at End of Willow

Amici's from the BART station:

Pass through station, turn right on Dublin Blvd
Tassajara Rd, left
1st left into parking lot - look for Peet's Coffee, Amici's is two doors west.

That looks like fun. We're going to pass. I have no stamina, and need to ride close to home, just in case the rib acts up and I have to wimp out. We'll take a rain check for next time, however, if that's possible.

Sigh...I'm tired of our local rides but understand the need to be close to home, just in case.

I hear it's going to be a dry winter...hope you have more rides planned. ;)

Well, only Pete, Ron, and myself showed up for this one - but we managed to have a good time, anyway. Ron had a real jones to go out to Livermore and do Patterson Pass, but we were having none of that. Pete suggested that Palomares might be too chilly , and thought that since the proposed ride was so short he might head over to Diablo afterward and try that. I stepped in and took control with my smooth command presence, and decided we should scrap the original plan entirely and head directly on over to Diablo, go down the back side, and loop on around for home.

So that's just what we did.

We had a nice rural/suburban cruise over to the base of Diablo, and took advantage of one of the many Starbucks along the way. Suitably refreshed, we headed for and attained the base of Diablo in short order. Pete and Ron were feeling frisky, so I bade them farewell as they scampered away while I slugged it out with my personal climbing demons.

They managed to summit about 10 minutes after I pulled into the junction about 4.5 miles below them (yes - I climb like ivy), and so I cooled my jets while they came back down to rejoin me.

After we were all together again, we took off on the descent. And here is the highlight of my day....

......a Cinderella Story, really......

Even though Pete had a 200 yard head start going down the mountain, I managed, through deft bike handling and coolness of character, to reel in, overtake, and PASS him to reach the bottom first.

I repeat:

Even though Pete had a 200 yard head start going down the mountain, I managed, through deft bike handling and coolness of character, to reel in, overtake, and PASS him to reach the bottom first.

:D:D FILM AT 11!!!!

After that, it was a rather pedestrian jaunt though the crack house strewn neighborhoods of Walnut Creek to the relative safely of Alamo and finally, Danville. After a delightful repast at Primo's Pizza, replete with the focused attentions of an attractive young woman server, we headed for home and parted ways.

I did not summit, nor did I go all the way back to the start at Pleasanton. So, my totals are a bit meager when compared to Pete's and Ron's - but I still managed to snag 47.5 miles and about 3800 feet of climbing.

And - the weather was perfect.

Other than that I was playing catch-up the whole day, so these pics are all I have:

:roflmao2: Not sure if I understood you. Did you PASS Pete on the way down? Good job guys. Wish I coulda joined ya!

Yes, he did. I'm a slowpoke on the downhill. I never used to be like that. I guess that's what happens when you go down speeding on a downhill.

Anyhow, it was a nice small little ride. Sometimes, you need that, and it's just as good (if not better) than a huge pack. It was good company, and BigBossMan led us through some new home communities, and it was nice.

And I did want to go to Patterson Pass, but I think starting it from Pleasanton may be a bit much. One of these days, I'll lead one starting in Livermore, and take it all the way to the top, and get a view of the windmill farm.

The ride up Mt. Diablo was great. There wasn't much traffic at all to contend with, and since this was the only big climb, that made it all that much better. I could focus on solely climbing Mt. Diablo. Pete did zoom past me (although he denies it). Pete and I were riding up the hill together for probably 5 minutes before he sped up the hill. That was fine, because hill climbing is really a personal thing, and I didn't want to blow my pace. This time, I decided to go up to the top. I did have some company, riding with one guy, who only had didn't have a triple, and was riding a 53-42. I don't know how he got up the wall with that but he did. Mayor kudos for him. :thumb:

I got up to the top, but no Pete. I later figured it out ... as I was climbing the wall, he was descending the wall on the other side. We must have missed each other by minutes.

On my way down, I did see this one lady, in pink, with panniers on both sides, front and rear. Dang!!! Pete says she uses fully loaded panniers for training. I think he might have a picture of her. We'll have to wait till he uploads them.

On the way into Danville, my legs felt dead. I think Mt. Diablo may have taken its toll on me. But then again, maybe it's that 18 mph pace we were taking (as BigBossMan told us at lunch). The big pizza sure hit the spot, and the coke sure helped too. Now to ice my knee and rest. :) I haven't even bothered to look at my camera and any pics, but may upload them tonight.

Good job guys. Too bad I didn't know about the route change, I would have headed to Diablo. I instead decided to ride my Happy Valley-Bear Creek Rd-Alhambra Valley-Reliez Valley and back to Lafayette route. With a finish climb to home on the 3/4 mile, 17% average hill.

Like riding a tandem, don't mess with the momentum riding downhill.

Great pics, guys! And the captions are funny, too.

Those towers just below the peak, on the north side, offer a launch for hang gliders. Many's the time I've been there, and to the top, in a 4WD vehicle with multiple gliders atop.

I've seen Pink Bike Lady, too, but not while on a bike. Carrying that much weight on a bike, on that climb, seems crazy, but then, she fits right in, doesn't she?

Well done, gentlemen, well done.

Superb. I don't know how you kept the bike on the mountain, you did say "the end is near", right?

Anytime anyone enters the phrase "HTFU" in a bike forum's post it should hyperlink to this video.

See ya next week for George’s ride.

Who is this "George" that you speak of?

OK - I hijacked most of his route, just remember we're starting from Orinda this time though :thumb:

The first time I made it all the way up that 17%-ish grade to the Diablo summit without having to get off and walk :p , I was riding it alongside Allison the Pink Lady. I figured if she could do it with the loaded panniers and the moose, I could sure as heck do it!

As a bonus at the top, she pulled a tupperware of brownies out of one of her panniers and passed them around to our group.

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart, and the utmost regard, for the Pink Lady!

Ed to add: I just saw your video Pete. Studly!! :D

I seem to see the Pink Lady almost anywhere I ride; Mt. Diablo, Pinehurst climb to Skyline, Death Ride...

We have to get her on NorCal BF.

Pete,

For the love or mercy man! Take care of your knees, you may need them someday when you are older.:twitchy: http://www.emedx.com/emedx/diagnosis_information/diagnosis_information_image_files/knee_images/knee_model-1.JPG
