Foo - Justifying your bike purchase to (shh) the other half

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As you know, a number of guys here have to justify their bike-related purchases with their wives

"But hun, these wheel's weight 9/10th my last set and makes me a whole 8 seconds faster over a mile!... can you just IMAGINE what that would mean if I was in the Tee Dee Effffff ?"

For those who are in this position, here's the plan. Every morning you go to work, justify to your other half why you're going to work. Lay out all the reasons why you have to get your ass outta the bed each day. And dont just say "gotta pay the bills"... no no no. Just like your wife will scrutinize each part of your bike's purchase, so you should scrutinize each bill, really break it down. Gas, electricy, fuel, insurance, lay it all out to her. Do this every day you go to work, tell her your justification for going to work.

On the odd occasion you buy a bike/part/accessory, just lay that on her too. Go ahead and justify that. Hun, I gotta work to pay the insurance, the gas, the bike wheels, the fuel, the tax, the bar tape, the ... you get the point.

Me? I'm kinda lucky. I bought wheels, new clothing, a few other items, iphone, mac, another computer, my wife didn't bat an eye lid! It was great. So looks like I'm outta the justification phase. But for those who are still there, go forth and justify away. See how it goes. Report back here soon.

You can help justify it by saying you are going to sell the old pair of wheels to a poor grad student that needs some to finish building their bike. :D

I can also do a partial exchange for new and unopened girly stuff like makeup, body wash, and other things to make her happy. :p

For that reason I'm glad I'm single --- if I were still married I would get the "what's wrong with the other bicycle?" routine, etc etc.

I don't seem to ever needing to justify anything. Besides, she had something go awry, so I can do whatever I want for the next...oh...20 years. :)

When I was married we had separate bank accounts and credit cards. We divided up the household bills and as long as everything got paid on time I didn't care what he spent his disposable income on and he didn't care what I spent mine on.

There is no justification. I am who I am, and she knows that.

Justify? Heck, The Girl told me to buy a workstand last weekend. She'd finally had enough of me spreading my tools out on the living room table and working my bike out there (which involved putting a towel under the bike while it was propped in my trainer, and then sitting on the floor and working, which led to me complaining about being sore, etc...) so I was instructed to buy a workstand and some protective carpet runner and turn a corner of the spare bedroom into my workshop.
No justification needed.

The Girl is a car junkie, anyhow. New car every 2 years. I'm justified in spending a couple hundred here and there on my bike.

i like seperate accounts for the smaller individual things - bikes and bike gear fits into this. same as my SO's shoes or purses and clothing.

but, the money has to go toward common goals first: putting a kid through college, buying\repairing a home, vacation, unexpected job lose, etc. and, in the longer term, eventually you gotta retire and live off what was saved or invested by both people.

if buying a new set of carbon wheels puts that stuff at risk, then you're doing it all wrong.

We have a joint account. If the purchase is monstrous, I need to make sure she cool with it.

I may not be "all there", but I'm certainly not a half a person. I only have to justify purchases to myself, and I'm a pushover.

Oooh, gruppo sale...

We're both getting new bikes. She knows I'm spending more on mine, but as long as she gets what she wants, I can get Record 11.

All it took was the look on my face after my demo ride and she said you're going to get it, aren't you? When I said I wanted to, she said, OK... consider it your birthday present (permission to get it or the bike itself). My birthday was only a couple of weeks away.
