Is it possible to paint or add a red glass to the fenix l2D and use it as a tail light on strobe mode? How would it compare to the Dinotte 140 ?

The strobe rate is very fast. I wouldn't recommend it. The DiNotte is civilized, the Fenix's strobe is intended to disorient. Power output of the Fenix L2D Q5 after installing the red filter is considerably lower than a DiNotte 140, too.

Are any flashlight manufacturers building a red LED version? From what I am reading, adding a red filter is not good. What you need is a red LED to begin with . This would be a lot cheaper than the Dinotte 140.

The Coast tactical flashlight has a 12Hz strobe. I have a flashlight with a 12Hz strobe and it's not a friendly thing to use on people.
That Mini-M*g mod looks interesting, 40 lumens is about what a DiNotte does on its lowest mode (pic (http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff237/mechBgon/DiNotte_low_steady.jpg)), and that still mops the floor with a Swerve or SuperFlash on steady-burn (pic, same camera settings (http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff237/mechBgon/Swerve_v_SuperFlash_indoor_steady.jpg)). But no flashing option is mentioned there :(
Bigger picture: those who want DiNotte 140-like power for less money could consider getting a Whelen TIR3, which is about $50, and hitch it up to a battery pack of your own (9.6V-15V should be ok). I have the similar Nova BULL and it's easily a match for the DiNotte.
