Your standard LX/105 quality Shimano square taper un-54 in 68x017 = answer. Close thread.

Tange subcontracts to Shimano.

OK, I have to wonder, what did you do to your bottom bracket during that ride? I've put thousands of miles in on mine and haven't heard a squeak. Are the bearings shot? or the axle> I'm just trying to imagine this

Yeah, usually it's the bearings that wear out. Mis-adjusted or un-maintained BBs will wear out their bearings quickly.

I'm not sure how that impacts my answer. Bb is worn out = replace with something we know to be of quality.

Assuming they aren't cartridge bottom brackets.

Like any subcontractor, Tange will make what ever quality the customer specifies and pays for. Shimano bottom brackets, no matter who actually makes them, have an excellent reputation for durability. The bb's Tange provides for the OEM market may (and probably are) not constructed to the same standards.

Reading between the lines, Tange makes LN39, LN59, and LN79 bottom brackets. I don't know what that equates to in Shimano-land (Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear?), but here's the LN79:

Bike Tools Etc. is also selling some Taiwan-sourced BB's similar to the LN59:

I wish that more people understood subs this way. We'll make it, how nice (how much do you want to pay?) do you want it?

Another parallel is Intel CPU chips, the majority of which are my outside the U.S. May have been a big reason they're able to outpace and undercut their competitors at IBM/Motorola.

Or how many "American" cars and trucks are made or assembled in Mexico for the same reason.

Ooops? Having replaced my bb with a solid Shimano UN54, it turns out that the noisy little pecker was a Sugino BB!
