Anyone here have one? Do you like it? What do you like/dislike about it? I am thinking about getting one for my daughter.

Yup. I got one. I have the 1st gen one and I love it. But the thing is only worth the money if you jailbreak it. That opens up SO much on the touch. But the web browsing is nice and it's pretty fun.

Can you explain the "jailbreak" ?

Basically, you hack the Ipod and you can install a TON of 3rd party software on it for free. You can do a lot of customizing as far as the display goes and system settings. Jailbreaking bassically takes an Ipod Touch and turns it into a very useful PDA.

Just do a Google search for jailbreaking. You will find all the info you could possibly want.

If I had a long train commute or something similar, I'd be all over one of those things. I'd load it up with episodes of shows ripped from DVD and a bunch of music, put on some headphones, and relax.

I'm kind of tempted even without such a commute (A little wireless SSH terminal would be sweet), but it's a bit pricey for a random toy, and I know I'd convince myself I need the model with the very largest SSD...

Using the WiFi on the touch... I know I can connect to my WiFI access point at home but... can I also tell the touch to connect to the shared drives available on my home lan and stream/copy/transfer media on them?

I don't have one but I've used my friends and it is alright. The only thing I like is the wifi. I really hate the scrolling on it though I always get stuff I don't want.

and... can I map/access network drives from the touch? Or do I need to install some lame app on the PC and keep the PC on?

I definitely will be buying either an ipod touch or an iphone soonish. Since I have a Mac with the development software, if I don't find a job upon graduation, I plan to spend the time and write some games using the SDK... who knows, perhaps they might sell.

iPod touch?

Yes.

I won't be getting it for now because:

32 GB is their max size, and it's not big enough for my needs, and
NO ROCKBOX. That's a big showstopper for me.

Girlfriend has an iTouch. I find myself screwing with that thing constantly. Free web browser with wifi, plus it's great selecting songs.

My boss got one for free with his new iMac. Its cool what you can do with the thing once its jailbroken.

What I'd like to write would be an RPG system in the vein of Kyle's Quest which used to be a hit on the Palm and PocketPC platform. Of course, have a decent campaign with it to start off.

But with the touch, you're not getting raped by AT&T every month.
