Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm not too big on doing bike mods or repairs...

Anyway, after falling down a cliff twice today while out MTBing (went back to show it who's boss the second time but crashed again :o ) I've decided that I need some better tyres to stop sliding around. My bike currently has 26x1.95's on it, what are the biggest tyres you would recommend using without getting new wheels? To use wide tyres like 2.5's do you need to get wider wheels too?

Thanks :)

a cliff? 1.95 tires?

are you doing DH on such slim tires? Well, some frames do allow only <2.5" tires. You should check with your LBS on what is the maximum tire width you can run on your frame/fork.

If you use the really wide tires, you may need to replace the rim.. But I don't think it you'll get to that point.. ;)

What are you using for brakes? Unless you have disc brakes, 2.2 is probably as wide as you can go. Wider tires will give you more trouble in muddy conditions.

I do not understand how you feel that the 1.95 tires resulted in you "falling down a cliff". Maybe all you need is a tire with a more aggressive "grippy" surface than what you are currently using.

I wasn't going DH, I was actually going right along the edge of the cliff (that's where the path went, nothing I could do about it) and when the tyres slipped sideways in the dirt it sent me over the edge. Nothing too serious, it was a soft surface luckily, but it still wasn't very fun :)

I've got V brakes, but I don't know if I'd want to go much bigger then 2.2 anyway since I also use the bike for commuting.

I think I'll have to go ask the shop what they think...

Thanks for the help :)
