Charity Events - 2009 LiveSTRONG Challenge Event Dates

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, the dust has barely settled from this year's LiveSTRONG Challenge in Austin, and the dates are posted* for the 2009 series:
June 20 - 21: Seattle, WA
July 11 - 12: San Jose, CA
August 22 - 23: Philadelphia, PA
October 23 - 25: Austin, TX
Registration begins on December 1, 2008 at LiveStrongChallenge.org (http://www.LiveStrongChallenge.org). Which one(s) are you planning to ride? You may select more than one answer.
I hope to see lots of Bike Forums members in Philly!
* As with any event planned far in advance, dates and locations are subject to change.
Edit 11/13/08: Please note that according to an e-mail from the event organizers, the date of the Seattle event has changed. The date is now June 20 & 21, not June 13 - 14 as is stated in the poll; I can not edit the poll options.

I'm really disappointed that there will be no Portland, OR ride this next year. I had a team and really loved doing that event.

I will be in Austin again...I think. They are not making it easy on me...the 25th is my Anniversary...missed it this year...how many years in a row will this fly?
Might try to do the Philly ride as well but if it is a toss up between that or CBM I will be at CBM. With a newborn on the way in March it will be tough to get out for more than 2 events next year.

Looking forward to the Philly one. This will be my first LiveSTRONG Challenge, but my fourth century. The fact that registration for this opens on my birthday is a sign that I NEED to do this one! :)
I'll be doing the philly ride once again. I got the email the other day and I thought, man, I've got to get riding more, I only have 10 months to prepare :D
This will be my 4th year participating in the event, 3rd year riding. Love the course and am looking forward to another solid ass kicking. Barring any unforseen disasters, I'll be at the Lancaster CBM again the week before too.

I'm hoping to do the Seattle event. I suspect they changed the date so it wouldn't conflict with the Flying Wheels Summer Century

I'll be in philly again in 09. I will attempt the 100 again after my failed attempt this year. I only made it 80 miles when my knee gave out.

this past 2008 LiveStrong Challenge in Austin was my first bike event ever. I had a phreaking blast! Everything went so smooth, and the people & support were super nice. I did the 45-miler this time but will be doing either the 60 or 90-miler next year.
Registration is open today 12/1 - enter code LSCREG09 to get $15 off the registration (only good for today!)

WOW! I don't remember the registration opening this early last year. I'm in again for the 2009 century, but I don't known if I'll register today.

For the fourth year in a row, I am signed up for the Philadelphia 100 mile ride.
The first year I got there late, and rode a much shorter ride, then for two years I missed it completely.
This year, I will actually attempt to ride 100 miles. :)

If anyone from out of the area is coming to the Philly event, send me a PM if you're interested in getting together for a ride before the event. Bucks and Montgomery Counties both offer some outstanding riding areas. I live in the 'burbs, about 10 miles from the start of the ride.
^I'm in
There's a ride called 'girls with gears' around that area, that hits some of the same roads as the LSC, in the spring. The routes are pretty solid and have enough hills to be classified as an LSC training ride for sure:
http://carolforheart.org/default.asp?p=fundraisers/event&page=Girls%20With%20Gears%202009
Trek was there last year raffling off bikes. The girl that rode in right behind me won a brand new madone. The look of shock on her face was awesome :)
I did the Portland rides the last two years. Maybe I should make it three with Philly.

Signed up for the 70 in Philly, this will be my first event of anykind, I did not want to bite off more than I can chew!!! Maybe some one can tell me, If I feel like I can do the 100 can I change?

You can change anytime and just ride the route you want, but they stage the starting times according to distance. I would roll out with the 100's and change back to 70 if you need to in order to make sure you have enough time to do the 100 if you chose to.

maybe? Sign up... chop chop! Extra points if you ride it on your 'city/commuter' bike ;)

If I feel like I can do the 100 can I change? You can change while out on the course. At about the 35 mile mark there is a turn for the 70 mile route or you can continue straight for the 100 mile course. Make sure you are a strong climber if you plan to do the 100. After that 35 mile mark it gets pretty hilly.

Thanks,
I have read that the course is very hilly, and no I am a flatlander from N.E.Ohio, but I do try to ride hills that are not to far from me, I plan on driving over to western PA which is only about 40 min drive and training hard on hills over there.

If anyone is interested then I have a "team" for the Livestrong Philly event.....the team does not benefit in any way but it might be fun for some of us to get together or band together. If we can raise 10k as a "team" then I believe we get an automatic invite to the Roses Ride in Austin....which could be cool.
I am from Augusta Ga but Philly is the closest event to me. My mom was diagnosed with Terminal Stage 4 Lung Cancer 2 months ago, so somehow this event seems like something I should take part in.
If anyone that is planning on going to the event anyways can sign up under my team if you are so inclined....I am working on getting some jerseys made that will commemorate the event. Your call.
So I introduce you to Team Cycle Pig! (https://www.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=294753&lis=1&kntae294753=D766098DE43D4C4385E665FCC4864679&supId=241365382&team=3276390) Ok I liked the name...what can I say. :D
So far we have my wife and I signed up.....and I have committments from 3 or 4 other people.....could be fun.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I got interested in it for similar reasons. My grandfather died from lung cancer in '98 and my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in September and is now undergoing chemo (her 2nd treatment, of 6, was today). I'd join you guys but I've already signed up to ride with Team Fat Cyclist: Fighting for Susan (https://www.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=294753&lis=0&kntae294753=8A85940F1B6E4FAF9EAAEFE75562C259&supId=0&team=3274894&cj=Y). What distance are you doing?
btw, you need $10k as an individual to get an invite to the Ride for the Roses.

I am doing the 100 miler.....
You don't realize how many people are affected by cancer until it affects you.....it sucks. My mom has zero chance...the cancer wasn't found until it was too late, no chance of surgery and they are only doing chemo to see how long they can keep her alive.
If that isn't a kick in the teeth then I don't know what is. I don't think I'd want to know if it were me....

Sincerely Sorry to hear about your Mom, I lost my Dad to lung cancer about 6 years ago, also my wife lost her dad to Colon cancer about 8 years ago, we both lost a dear friend about 1 year ago and my cousin just lost his wife (who was only 52) about 4 month's ago.
So I guess what I am saying is that you are right you start thinking about all the people you know who have been affected by cancer and you kind of go Wow!!!
One good note is My boss and friend (yea I know that is rare in today’s work place) about 18 to 20 years ago in 2 different bouts with the big C had 28 tumors and 1 kidney removed and also had tuberculoses injected into his bladder to eat the lining of the bladder and also kill the cancer and it worked and he is still alive and cancer free!!
I'll be riding the 90 mile (I thought they had a 100 mile option) in Austin this year. It's my first year for it and my brother and I have started a team in my mothers honor ... she passed away last month from cancer. Having never riden that far before and having always been more of a mountain biker, I'm really excited about this opportunity.
Anyone up for some training rides?

All rides have a choice of distances.
I went and looked... If you go to the registration page, it gives you a choice of 10, 40, 70 or 100 miles.

HigherGround, I am going back and forth between registering for the 100 and the 70. 100 sounds do-able sitting here in Feb with dreams of good training and rides for 2009, but my wisdom and age tells me to pound out the 70 and enjoy the 70 ride that I know I can do. I need some motovation!

Unfortunately that kind of promotion wouldn't work for me. I got tired of the "half full / half empty" look (due to a receding hairline), so I have been shaving my head for several years now. I do get lazy, so sometimes it grows back to maybe 1/8" or 1/4" before I shave it again. Regardless, the reaction would either be, "So what? You normally shave it any way" or "So what? There's so little there to be cut off!" I'd probably shave more by losing the goatee!
